I ga-run-tee you they won't use thinner steel...they will use plastic. Think Saturn pre-2007.

Plastic is made from petroleum, wouldn't that be defeating the purpose of using less oil.

...if the auto industy cared about using less oil, which they don't. It's not their job to care. Thats our job. If we want to be oil concious, then our buying trends will dictate what the auto industy will produce in the future. At least that's the way its supposed to happen in theory. Just like they really don't care about the environment. The only reason they care about MPG's is to make the public think they are green and keep buying hybrid SUV's...which really aren't that green.

Remember MPG's for sales is what it's ALL about to automanufacturers.

On a side note...you think plastics being made from petroleum is bad...watch this little slight of hand. The corn being grown to create American E85... is a hybrid blend that requires 3 times the amount of petrochemical pesticide as regular corn...and still requires diesel running machinery to move the crop through the entire process of planting all the way to filling the tanks at your local gas station.

Yet again don't see how that's really green.

When nerly all mnaufacturers are after Horsepower and cars are getting heavier and heavier. This a good step, hopfully others will follow too.

Stop this horsepower war and start a war of Fuel efficiency, better safety and lower weight.
