the plushness is much the reason. and getting the looks. but mostly the price. maybach is its main competetor, and maybach 62, base price is $390,000, while RR's base price is $220,000. Difference?

I wrote a long reply about the Rolls-Royce Phantom a few months ago. Click on my name to check it out. Once you've driven one regularly, it is easy to go on and on about it, if you love cars. I will keep this reply brief.

I have driven every S-Class since 1990, every Lexus LS, the current Audi A8, and the Maserati Quattroporte. I have yet to drive any BMW 7-Series, though :(

I drove the Phantom for about 4,000 miles.

Other than the Phantom, my favorite luxury car is the current Mercedes S-Class, with the Lexus LS460 in second place. (best audio, though.)

At $400,000, the Phantom exposes every other luxury car (including the Bentley) for what they are -- mass produced. Everything about the Phantom represents the best man can do when manufacturing a luxury automobile -- the body, paint, wood, leather, ride, power delivery, comfort, quietness, high-speed stability, road presence. The Phantom has a magical way of concealing all of the technology is hauls around. You can close the iDrive screen and controller, leave the radio off and enjoy a simple drive.

Why is it worth $400,000+ when new? It is unique. It is not based on any other car platform. Only the engine is derived from BMW's V12. According to what I have read, only 10,000 will be built, all by hand. Go to the website to learn more, because a lot of manpower goes into "commissioning" a Rolls-Royce. Most people will not see one "in the wild" much less sit in one or drive one.

Does it have shortcomings? Yes, lots of them. Every car has them. I'll save that for a personal review of the car.

Its presence. I've been in and rode in a 99 Silver Seraphe and its the presence and comfort that surrounds you. I've seen the inside of the phantom, but never rode in one, but I heard its supposed to be even more superfluous than the Silver Seraphe.

Then again, thats a 500K phantom. I don't know how a 200K rolls will be, but it surely won't disappoint.

Where in the world are you that there are Rolls-Royces for $500,000? Are those Australian dollars or a conversion?

In the United States the Phantom generally runs about $357,000 to $360,000 depending on the options. The MSRP is $30,000-$40,000 less than that.

Its really hard to find a Phantom in my area that will run under 400K. Most of them are individually ordered with options. But yes, 500k is a stretch, more like 450K.

Pictures never do the phantom enough justice. In real, the phantom has more road presence than anything! Including the more expensive Maybach.

here in UAE RR Phantom starts at $400K and goes upto $500K for the RR Phantom LWB Middle East edition. Further individual options/company coustomization are separate.

I'm originally from Cameroon - Central Africa. The VAT is about 70% of the value of your vehicle. You buy a $400,000 RR, ship it home and you paid an additional $280,000 to the customs. Believe me... That is no fun.

bentley corners the market on affordable luxury. a conti gt at 150-ish is the way to go. otherwise youare settling or over compensating
