WOW! If the next BMW 5-Series looks THIS hot, LOOK OUT!

WOW! If the next BMW 5-Series looks THIS hot, LOOK OUT!
This car definitely won't be at the 2008 Detroit Auto Show but boy do we wish it WAS going to be there...

Actually, we wish both cars that are in this photo were showing up in Motown next week.

But alas, we'll all have to wait till the Geneva 2009 auto show for the official launch.

Until then, we can all druel over one of AutoCar's latest covers showing the next 5-Series and next Mercedes-Benz E-Class.

Let's have some fun here...

Let's pretend these photoshop's are EXACTLY what the two cars will look like.

If that's the case in our pretend scenario, which one is the better looking car in your opinion?

This should be a blast hearing the responses!

I'll play along and suspend disbelief in order to pretend these are accurate depictions of the next 5-Series and E-Class. If so, this 5-Series represents a dramatic improvement over the exterior aesthetic of the current 5. I loved the Concept CS from Shanghai and think this 5-series design incorporates its design cues extremely well. As for the E-Class, it's nice, but nothing that commands attention or looks particularly fresh in the way the CLS, CL or even S-Class does. Hopefully M-B does something more compelling than this.

The BMW CS concept is really sexy and I hope the interior is as nice too. As the E class there's really not much change on it, the front is Lexus GS and the rest of the body only got refreshed.

The front of the E-Class doesn't look anything like the Lexus GS. The headlight design in that photoshop seems like a natural design evolution from curvacious to semi-boxy.

Here's a friendly suggestion there Designer1...

You might consider changing your screen name, because obviously with an inane statement like,

"As the E class there's really not much change on it, the front is Lexus GS and the rest of the body only got refreshed"

You don't posses the critical eye that a 'true' designer requires.

In other words, this E-Class rendering looks nothing like the current E-Class in either proportion or detail.

The CS concept is a yet another breakthrough for BMW. I hope they leverage this technology to facilitate a better interior design. BMW needs to focus on this aspect and come away as a market leader once again, not a challenger.

Good god, please let that be the next 5-series.

It looks absolutely stunning!!!

The E looks much improved as well, but that BMW blows it out of the water on the styling front.

That bloated whale of the E looks like a 5th grader did it in Microsoft Paint. The real car wont look anything like that, I can tell u for sure its wrong because NO Mercedes arent getting any rounder these days.

That 5-series rendering is world's better than the current one, and seems like a logical direction for the model to go if the CS is/was indication, but...

That E-Class 'rendering' does not work for me at all!

It looks like little more than a bloated C-Class, which I don't find very attractive in the least due to its rather inelegant nose, oddly shaped greenhouse, and abruptly chopped-off rear end...

In summary:

5-Series - Yes

E-Class - No

BTW: Given these two 'renderings':

BMW - Thumbs Up

Mercedes - Thumbs Down

I don't think that BMW has the ba##s to make the 5 series exterior this good, because the 5 series through all its life has been a bit conservative, and this is the most used car in the executive class, and they don't want something vulgar or overly aggressive, so i think that even though the 5 series may take ques from the CS, it will not look that close to the CS as has been represented in this depiction. Sorry, a fake depiction, indeed.

i think the current generation of BMWs proves BMW really could care less about people thinking they have balls or not, the current models are almost avant garde with their flame surfacing, and details. Far from the conservative blandness of Audi, or Mercedes(except the new models) but personally i liked the more conservative BMW i think they looked better than the current generation cars, they were very business like, conservative without being boring, but nothing brash or avant garde

What so great about taking a perfectly good headlight and chomping the top off it? I'd like to see this design era go away and replaced with a futuristic vision of the original kidney beans and round headlight...could be interesting. Make the front look like an updated 2002 or CS 3.0. It wouldn't be an easy task, but a REAL designer like Henrik Fischer or the Pininfarina studios could pull it off.

By the time I have the cash to own a 5 series by todays dollars they will probably cost well over 80 grand at that point.

100% agree.

I love the way the current 5 Series (or at least the '08-on) looks... but this looks even better.

The 5 looks like the current 5 with a new face on it.
The E looks like a bigger C-Class, which is nothin' to write home about.
The 7 series will show off the new design theme the best. The 5 doesn't need as much help.

And, although people don't really realize it, that's exactly what the E60 was compared to the E39. Look at them side-by-side. They're really not very different at all--new light clusters and less cladding on the E60, but the same general shape. That will continue on with the next 5er.

That 5 Series photoshop looks gorgeous! I hope it does end up like that, because I'd be in line for the next M5 in no time...

The E-Class? I know Mercedes will do better with the real version.

I like the 5 series, except for the headlights. I still miss the clean profile of the E39 headlights and the eyebrows on the E60 just never did it for me. I'll bet they won't even speculate on what the next bangle butt will look like. If this is close to being accurate, I am a little disappointed in the E-Class, especially those headlights. I think the current S-Class is one of the best looking large sedans on the road. They could have made a slightly smaller, baby S-Class and I would probably love it. These are probably artist renderings anyway. I doubt any magazine has seen any one of these cars yet.

The thing is that the family relation of MB classes says that the C is a mini S, the CLK is a C/E hybrid coupe and the E itself is its own little branch of design.

Interesting evolutions for both models. I am more traditional, so I would most likely go for the E-Class. That 5-Series looks mean and aggressive, and it works.
