Audi A4 "the sportiest car in its class".

Audi A4
Audi is on a mission to reinvent itself in the United States, and the 2009 Audi A4 is an important part of that quest. The company hasn't yet grabbed the entry-luxury market by the throat in America as it has in Europe. After spending about a billion dollars thinking about its stance relative to the Bavarian competition, Audi thinks it has the solution in the redesign of the A4, its best-selling car.

Initial impressions revealed nothing but good news. Even hidden under heavy camouflage in spy photos, the 2009 Audi A4 began to excite. It became obvious that the car would borrow many of its razor-sharp lines from the A5 coupe, like its aggressive flat face and austere Bauhaus lines.

Then the new A4 made its worldwide debut at the
2007 Frankfurt Auto Show. Audi's chairman of the executive board, Rupert Stadler said that dynamics, performance and technology would be the new corporate mantra. The company went further to proclaim that the 2009 Audi A4 is dramatically more engaging to drive, and is the sportiest car in its class. Audi is genuinely hoping to usurp the BMW 3 Series as the driver's choice.

Audi has good reason to have high expectations. The new car is built atop an entirely new all-steel chassis, which Audi calls a Modular Longitudinal Platform (MLP). The new design allows for the placement of engine and transmission a full 5.9 inches rearward by mounting the differential forward of the gearbox, which in turn allows the front wheels to be located closer to the nose. This translates to better driving dynamics.

On the topic of differentials, Audi has changed the all-wheel-drive system around, too. The company states the purpose of the new 40/60 torque split is to increase stability in low-speed corners. But the unwritten goal is, of course, to come closer to the rear-wheel-drive feel of offerings from BMW and Mercedes.

We drove the revamped A4 last October and were immediately able to spackle some concrete behind Audi's bold claims. We wrote of the handling as "a revelation," saying that the car turned in briskly and inspired real driver confidence.

If the chassis is something to write home about, the powertrain options are short of revolutionary. As before, Americans will have a choice of a turbocharged, two-liter four-cylinder in front-wheel-drive models (initially) or a 3.2-liter V6 for the AWD A4.

The grass is greener in Europe, where buyers can opt for three different turbodiesels: a 140-horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder, a 190-hp 2.7-liter V6 and a new "clean" 3.0-liter V6 that makes 240 hp and 369 pound-feet of torque. We wait with the Europeans for the S4, which will likely carry the same 354-hp V8 of the S5.

With $3 billion and three years invested in a complete redesign, the refocused 2009 Audi A4 is sure to make our radar in the months before its release. And its new performance-geared promise makes us all the more eager to put it under the gun of our test equipment.

Great lineup of (turbo)diesels...

I'm just not 'warming up to' the looks this time around, as I don't care for this new 'Droopy Butt' design language that Audi debuted on the Q7.

Stylistically, it's somewhat a step backwards for Audi, and as nicely put together as Audi interiors tend to be, from design standpoint, they seem to be resting on their laurels a bit too much with their latest offerings.

Other opinions may differ, but these are mine.

Neither of the two entry level A4 models will be competing with the 335i or IS350. The A4 3.2 is competing with the BMW 328i. The upcoming B8 S4 will drop the V8 in favor of a twin turbo V6 with ~330ish hp. That will be competing with the BMW 335i. Finally, the RS4 with its upcoming 4.2L ~450ish hp V8 will be competing with the M3 Sedan. There will also be a similar engined RS5 to compete with the M3 Coupe.

i still remember the days when the s4 competes directly with m3 with the same asking price etc etc.

so since when does a $10,000 more expensive car (s4)compete so closely with a cheaper car (335i) which is also more fun to drive?

it must mean either audi diluted the 'S' badge altogether or that the S4 is just an anomaly in audi's S lineup and it's not worth the money to get one.

The S models never competed with the M models, the RS models always competed or surpassed the M models.

It's just that BMW was slow with updating their M3 models that Audi incase of the S4 started to catch up to them with just the S4.

thanks for taking the time to prove my point, about the S cars competing with the M cars from BMW, ill agree with he fact that the rs4 cars are a way to surpass the M, and AMG cars...the RS4(last generation) and new M3 have close to the same power output im sure that when the new RS4 is released it will have more power than the new M3, but the last generation M3 and S4 had very close power outputs with the S4 having more power. So yes the M3 and S cars for years have competed with the RS cars being much more focused performance cars than the S cars. With that said the 2.0t, and V6 have always been the cars to go against the lower end C class, and 3 series, nothing has changed....

"so since when does a $10,000 more expensive car (s4)compete so closely with a cheaper car (335i) which is also more fun to drive?"

HOW DO YOU KNOW IT WILL BE $10,000 MORE EXPENSIVE?

You're thinking about the S5 and the 335xi coupe. Well, listen to this: when both are loaded with every option, the S5 is only about $700 more than the 335xi coupe... but it gives you 54 more horsepower, 19" rims, a better interior and sexier style to play with. And for the record, it is quicker--S5's fastest recorded 0-60 time is currently 4.5 sec.

However, the new S4 will most likely be ~$5,000 less than the S5, for a few reasons: Audi four-doors have traditionally been less expensive than the coupes, and the S4 will have a twin-turbo six instead of the S5's costlier, heavier V8. It will probably be even quicker than the S5, because the normal A4 weighs less than the A5 with the same engine.

There you go...

S4 .. you are incorrect in regards to the 335xi coupe vs the audi S5. You say all the options which means the BMW will have more equipment than is available on the S5. If you price them out comparatively, then you will notice the S5 is actually about $5k more than the 335xi coupe. Then include the maint for the next 4 years which saves you an additional $2k ... For that $2k, i can chip a 335xi coupe and bring the hp via dinan up to 384 hp and 421 lbs of torque ...

THE OPINIONS OF PEOPLE WHO HAVE ACTUALLY SAT IN IT AND DRIVEN IT:

Every magazine has said the new A4 raises the bar again with its gorgeous interior, unflattering press shots regardless. I'd like to have a word with the guy who chose to smatter a black interior with aluminum trim all over the Internet... how about a more creative color that shows off the A4's materials?

I got my latest issue of European Car mag today, and in it was a tidbit from an interview with an Audi exec. He said that yes, the next lineup of cars will have turbos, and also that we shouldn't expect massive power increases à la the competition. Audi is more focused on lowering weight, improving handling and upping the fuel efficiency at the moment... which I heartily endorse. The new A4 showcases that; the old 3.2 was painfully slow compared to the competition (try 0-60 in 7 sec), but the new model will be able to break six. The same applies to the new TT; it has the same V6 but is much quicker.

anyways this article is about the new Audi A4 and not a comparison bout the 3-series vs the Lexus ..

I like the A4 and think this is a nice change in comparison to the BMW. I wish Audi would make a more competitive engine . It is good to see that they are finally realizing that in order to compete with the BMW, that the wheels have to be pushed out as far as they can go + the engine and transmission have to be set back more. This provides better balance = better handling ...

the reason why the new A4's 3.2L engine only produces 265 is because they're recycling the same old engine that's been around for nearly a decade. there's nothing new internally and the engines are probably collecting cobwebs in audi's factory.

Audi needs a new, more powerful V-6 to stay competitive with the economy and performance of BMW's wonderful twin turbo V-6, Lexus's smooth and strong top of the line V-6, CAdillac's new V-6, and Infiniti's strong and sporty 306 hp 3.6 liter. The V-8 S4 can't compete on the same fuel economy level as these engines or price wise, especially considering the prices of the CTS and Infiniti, and even more so considering the Infiniti's performance. (+ I heard that to keep the Infiniti ahead of the game they are going to drop the G37's engine in the G35)

i LOVE THE LOOKS OF THE NEW A4, ALWAYS HAVE, as I am on my second one and 3rd Audi to date. I think it looks the best in its class and hopefully the new platform will help alot with the handling.

I just wish the A4 could get the rumored V6TT instead of the S4. Yes the current s4 is only about 4g's more then a similiar equipped 335Xi, but the lease prices are about $400 more a month , because of the 'S' tag.

in fact, you can even think of the more expensive s4 as overpriced and overhyped. if you allow yourself to be humble for once.."

1. First part is ridiculously shallow. You don't see my trading in my car for a 335 because of the badge on its hood.

2. The excellence of a car (or lack of) is not universal. I love my S4, it's incredible, and I think of its $65K sticker as a bargain. The V8 is glorious, the interior is beautiful, the rear seat is useful, the handling is confident, it tracks through the winter like a pro and I love the way it looks with the top down.

"overhyped?" The S4 has barely been hyped at all. If anything, it's underrated.

New A4 is a graet addition to a great car line up. To me it is the best looking in its class...period!

New A4 is a great car and will be a great seller for Audi. I don't get why most of the 14 year olds on this site not wait until they can drive and drive it for themselves, before making idiotic comments.

Is it the sportiest in the class? probably not, but is it sporty, I bet it is. Its a great improvement from the old A4, and it continues Audi's climb. Why does every success for a company have to be met by dumb comments trying to bring it down?

It will look beautiful in dark blue with the amaretto interior.

No, it's not the sportiest car in the class. I don't know why they're asserting that, because the accountants have held the engineers back in this regard. The handling COULD be much better with the new platform... but for some twisted, cruel reason they don't want that to happen. "Save room for the RS4" doesn't cut it for me; why can't they all have perfect handling, with different levels of speed on each model? They have the looks down. The interior is once again the best at this price. Even the rear seat is great now! So where's the big performance improvement? I agree with jmr in that we should NOT have to pay extra on an S4 badge--as much as I love the S4 badge--to get the kind of performance that really should be on the six-cylinder A4.

I'm waiting for them to do something good, because that B7 RS4 is looking pretty sweet to me right now...

thats my only knock on the car, the car looks great and will probably drive better then the B7, but I want more power, thats all, and I dont want to shell out another $400 a month for it.

MB,BMW,lexus and infiniti all got it, there top of the line(not including M,RS,or AMG)have 300+ horsepower, but for Audi you need the S4 badge for that.

Simply amazing! Finally an A4 that looks as good if not better than the older B6 platform. A true work of art inside and out.

Everything is a work of art on the A4 except the engine. The A4's engine is underpowered.

since a4's platform will be based off of the a5 platform, we should just be expecting a 4 door version of the a5, right?

since we can't do a shootout between the a4 and the 335i sedan yet, perhaps we can predict how a4 will perform by comparing s5's performance against 335i coupe.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v93pfKvW69Y

obviously the things to point out would be that s4's awd system made it heavy and understeer at various times on the track and the fact that vicky was driving the rwd 335i not the heavier 335xi with xdrive. but basically the USD $40800 335i beat the more expensive, more powerful USD $50500 s5 in the end. and to think that dinan offers a $2000 80 bhp upgrade chip with a warranty that matches bmw's own.

um, no.

the A4 is nice, though feeling dated.
doesn't drive nearly as well the 3-series.

U.S. investigates BMW airbags

Harry Stoffer
Automotive News Europe
January 8, 2008 - 2:11 pm ET

WASHINGTON -- U.S. safety officials are investigating whether more than 300,000 BMWs should be recalled to repair advanced airbags.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said it is reviewing various 2004-06 BMW models because the sensing system for the front passenger’s front-impact airbag may malfunction.

Federal regulation requires advanced airbags. Their deployments are supposed to be tailored to the severity of a crash and the type of passenger present, mainly to prevent inadvertent injuries to children and small adults.

But NHTSA says the BMW airbags may be turned off when they should not be.

The agency said today that it and BMW together have collected more than 700 complaints about the sensing system. BMW also has recorded more than 23,000 possibly related warranty claims, according to a document on NHTSA’s Web site.

NHTSA said BMW introduced a revised sensor mat for the passenger seat in December 2005. BMW issued a technical service bulletin about the airbags in June 2006.

Yes, the BMW is so much better!

a potential and not yet official recall has something to do with 3 series' success, performance, and handling in comparison to audi's upcoming a4?

it appears that the new a4's handling isn't nearly as good as the 3 series' according to various reviews.

here's one:
http://www.autozeitung.de/online/render.php?render=87641

the brand new a4 suffered in the handling department in this diesel shootout between 6 cars. maybe they should have spend more than 3 billion designing the new a4, because this new a4 is going to be around for another 8 years.

not the sportiest car in its class now is it?

Always an excuse by BMW fanboys. It is what it is. As for handling, this somewhat comical already. The majority of drivers couldn't tell the difference in handling as handling is subjective. Someone may like the way one car handles and someone else will come along and not unless it extremely obvious. Audis handle quite well and are spot on. So, a little difference in handling as a subjective criteria is not a slam dunk for winner takes all. You should read abou the new A4 from Autoweek, CAR, Automobile, and others to realize this is going to one amazing vehicle in its class.

you were the one trying to diverge our attention away from the subject at hand, which is the new a4. if anything, you came up with the excuses, not us.

the spanking brand new a4 handles worse than the 3 series. that is a fact, proven with empirical means. the new a4 doesn't handle like a boat, but it is not the best in its class, contrary to what audi's chairman rupert stadler claims. various magazines like car gave the 3 series higher rating than the a4. automobile magazine hasn't reviewed the new a4 yet, so i don't know what you're talking about.

why do you not care about a4's handling and performance? are you making excuses for yourself not being able to tell differences in handling?

Who cares if the Audi A4 handles a bit worse than the BMW 3-series?

The A4 has never been a better handler than the 3-series.

However, what Audi has done is they have made the difference in handling much smaller than it was before and to add tot he A4's appeal they made it much much larger than the previous version, packed it with new technology such as Audi's Magnetic Ride, Drive Select, MMI etc...and kept the price below the competition.

The 2009 Audi A4 is just what Audi needs if they are to be the number one selling premium brand in 2015.

I never said I do not care about handling and performance. The new A4 is one of the best handlers and performers as spotted by various publications already. Reroad the post and stop making up things that you assume I mean. Take a lesson in critical thinking before mouthing BS.

Furhtermore, as stated by CAR magazine in its initial review of the new A4: The new A4 crushes the 3-Series in presesnce and refinement. It makes the 3-Series look a Nissan Primeva(?) {must be some kind of econo-box in Europe}. Also, where do you get this by empirical means? That doesn't even make sense for a reviewer. Handling cannot be empirical. It is always subjective.

don't tell me you really can't name one objective way to measure handling? not one? don't play dumb now.

"handling is always subjective." according to whom? so basically your opinions represent the whole automotive industry?

looks, however, are subjective. maybe you're confusing your definition of looks and handling? i know ppl who don't know cars get those two mixed up all the time. i just didn't know you're one of those people.

Automobile magazine HAS done an initial review/drive of the new A4 as has Motor Trend and others. So YOU! do not know WHAT you are talking about. The review was in Italy. It's in the 01 issue of Automobile Stop trying to put down Audi for the sake of propping up BMW. Real enthusiasts don't do that, only little fanboys do.

the problem with automobile and motor trend is that they both haven't actually pitted the new a4 against the 3 series yet. but other sources have, and i've listed them.

i'm not twisting words around to "prop up" bmw like a fanboy. i merely stated facts, founded by reviewers who just happened to have performed tests on both the bmw and audi.

i'm simply trying to enlighten the unenlightened. if you don't like what the reviewers say, you can stop yourself right there and quit reading on.

the current discussion clearly is whether the new a4 is the sportiest car in its class and i think we already know what that answer is. a big no.

I know for fact that this isnt the sportiest car in its class, but its a big improve from the last, and if u ask me who buys an AUDI A4, someone who has good taste, concern about safety, quality, mpg, 4 wheel drive, and to be different, does the 3 series look as good? i dunt think so.
