Some Things Just Have To Wait: What Superstar Bought This R8 But Isn't Driving It?

Some Things Just Have To Wait: What Superstar Bought This R8 But Isn't Driving It?

What a difference a year makes!

If you asked me where Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo was going to be at the end of last year.  I never would have told you he would be leading the team into the NFC playoffs with second best record in the league.

With fame comes fortune, and with fortune comes a different perspective on taste.  Witness the beginning of 2007 and Tony was dating upcoming country superstar Carrie Underwood.  A year later, a $67.4 million multi-year contract, and poor Carrie was traded in for non other than starlet Jessica Simpson.  Out with the old and in with the new.

With that much cash on hand I would imagine your automotive taste might change as well.

While in the showroom of University Park Audi near downtown Dallas today I was admiring a stunning new black R8 sitting on the floor right next to an equally stunning Porsche Turbo.  Knowing the R8 is effectively sold out for at least three years, I need to know who would buy such a car and let it sit?  I prodded the salesman a bit more and he let it slip that the Porsche on the floor was actually traded in for the R8 by a prominent sports figure here in Big-D. This sport figure would be picking it up after he wrapped up a few “loose ends”.

Now my wheels started turning and I remembered seeing Tony at a local restaurant in a remarkably similar black Porsche Turbo just a few week back.  A bit more prodding revealed the yet unnamed sports figure had just returned from a brief vacation south of the border, exactly where Tony Romo reportedly was just last week by the local press.  So I just had to ask if it was he was the unnamed owner.  You could have knocked the salesman over with a feather, and he finally admitted I was on to him. This black R8 was Tony’s new ride.

Oh by the way those “loose ends” Tony needed to wrap up, just happen to be the playoffs.  You see Tony wanted no distractions before the big games so the R8 will stay planted in the showroom until he is ready for delivery.

Some things it seems, can wait for just the right time.

Still just looks like the TT with some decent wheels thrown on it, and then a ridiculous price tag wacked on it!!!!

The R8 is one of the coolest designs out right now (one of the only Audis), and no, it does not look like the girly TT. It might not perform as good as the GTR but it's very close, thus an impressive machine.

"Not even close. What's the R8's time on the Nurburgring vs. the GT-R? Enough said."

Huh? The Nürburgring is now the official measure of a car's greatness?

When Sport Auto clocked the R8 and 997 Turbo on the ring the R8 was only 10 seconds slower. Not bad for a car that is heavier and considerably less powerfull.

"But a R8 has no greatness, it's more show than go."

Are you a brick wall? Have you read a SINGLE REVIEW? The stunning handling? The perfect balance? The confidence-inspiring grip? The perfect amount of speed, without being scary fast?

Shouldn't he wait until after the big win to give himself a new toy?

First the Jessica jinx and now the "bought the new toy before the event" jinx...guess the Cowboys won't be winning this year.

Three years is crazy.

I have seen some R8's on the road, but the most beautiful of them was a white one. It really stands out.

That particular R8 has been at University Park audi since they were released. From what the sales people told me was that the owner of the vehicle bought but was a busy man and that instead of keeping it garaged up and collecting dust, he would rather have the dealership hold it where it would be taken cared of and cleaned. When i saw it they had it in the delivery bay for a few months.

Is this car at the Plano, TX dealer? That dealer has two identical R8's (one with stick shift and one with e-gear) on Ebay Motors right now.
