Peugeot Hopes To Avenge Lemans Loss To Audi By Entering 12 Hours Of Sebring

Peugeot is among the list of entries for the American Le Mans Series' annual Winter Test at Sebring, joining Series prototype regulars such as Audi Sport North America, Penske Racing and Dyson Racing from the Porsche camp, three Acura teams, Mazda's B-K Motorsports and Intersport Racing.

An impressive list of the Series' top GT2 teams with representation from Dodge, Ferrari, Ford and Panoz also are entered for the three-day Test, scheduled from January 28-30 at Sebring International Raceway. It serves as a warm-up for the 56th Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring presented by Fresh from Florida on March 15, the opening race for the 2008 American Le Mans Series.

The entry of a diesel-powered Peugeot 908 leads many to believe the French factory will enter Sebring and provide a rematch of last year's clash at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Peugeot began on pole position there but Audi led every lap of the race with the trio of Frank Biela/Emanuele Pirro/Marco Werner taking their second straight victory in the Audi R10 TDI. They won by 10 laps over the Peugeot of Sebastien Bourdais/Pedro Lamy/Stephane Sarrazin. The Audi trio also won last year at Sebring.

Lola has also announced a LMP1 coupe for Le Mans. However, Audi is providing the technical and financial support of this to expand its privateer program. The car will compete in this year’s Le Mans 24 Hours and Le Mans Series in the hands of existing Lola sportscar customer Charouz Racing System.

The Lola B08/60 LMP1 Coupe is the result of over 12 months research, design and aerodynamic testing at Lola’s renowned technical base in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire. Utilising significant upgrades in CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) and windtunnel equipment, Lola is the first constructor to get a customer LMP Coupe on to the track.

AUDI PERSPECTIVE:

The new Lola LMP1 Chassis is significant to Audi for several reasons. First and foremost, an Audi-powered Lola was campaigned this year at the 24 Hours of Le Mans by the Swiss Spirit Team. Described as an "exploratory effort", the car featured a V8 derived from the now-retired Audi R8 racecar and was said to the first of a possible privateer-oriented program if Audi were happy with the results.

I think that this will be the R10's last year as a factory team. It was the same with the R8s, in 1999 (really a tryout year), 2000, 2001, and 2002 victories. The R10's factory run is probably going to end soon. Then perhaps it will be customer teams like Champion Audi and Goh, etc who will pick up the R10s to race...
