A Hybrid Monopoly: Over 1,000,000 Hybrids Sold To Date

The cumulative reported US sales of hybrids, beginning with the introduction of the Honda Insight in 1999 and running through 2007, passed the one million mark in 2007 to reach more than 1,002,000 units.

The sales figures come from manufacturers’ monthly reports. The cumulative figure does not yet include sales from GM, who does not break out its hybrid sales separately.

While Honda and Toyota each held an approximately equal share of the market during its first few years, Toyota rapidly began gaining share in 2004 and beyond, even with the entry of others (Ford, Nissan) into the hybrid market.

At the end of 2007, Toyota accounted for 80% of all reported new hybrid sales. Cumulatively, Toyota accounts for 73% of the reported hybrids sold in the US from 1999-2007.

I can see Toyota's hybrid market shrinking ever so, so slightly. From the looks of the hybrid jaggernaut, it will take away probably an estimated 2% every 3-4 years from other hybrid rivals, even diesel for that matter. Simple b/c Toyota will soon come out with generation 3 or 4 hybrid and also mate a hybrid diesel in their line up, and I can see them start this from their SUVs' and Truck segment in the very near future...so "LOOK-OUT!!!"

Sorry, but the dominance won't go away for a while. Basically there was no competition to speak of for so long. Only now the diesel MAY challenge them.

Over 1,000,000 hybrids will be sold in the next 3 years.
Toyota will sell over 60% of them.
They will maintain a 2/3 market share for the forseeable future.

Haha...yeah yeah. What the Gov't need to also focus on are the large freight ships. I know the US Gov't is starting to crack down on 18 wheelers, but Cargo ships can spew the same amount of global warming fumes as over 12K autos per day!

I commended Automakers finally making alternative vehicles to help. Too bad the development is very expensive thus only large auto makes can produce them for now.

I wonder how many hybrid semis and hybrid rv's it would take to equal the green benefit of 1 million hybrid cars and suvs? I think we'll have our answer in the next 5 years.
