Chevrolet’s Corvette ZR1 was inspired by… BMW
We’re pretty excited to head over to Detroit this Saturday for the 2008 NAIAS to see the Corvette ZR1 live. You would think that GM kept the Vipers and the Mustang GTs in mind when producing the ZR1, but according to The Car Connection, engineers kept their attention towards German rivals.

At a recent press event for the new supercar, GM engineers told TCC that ‘German competition is driving the higher horsepower and torque numbers for the Corvette ZR1.’ Chevrolet said that the LS9 was created to match up against the...

Why are you so jealous that Chevy made the fastest corvette ever produced. By the way I can tell that this thing will be faster in the slalom and the drag than the Audi R8.

Another dumb comment. The R8 doesn't compete against this car, and as much as I love the R8, nowhere close in performance and price.

Only competitor is the GT-R

Z06 is already faster on the track than the R8. Mags have already proved that. The only thing Corvette needs to truly compete in the World stage is to have an available AWD system. Audi kicks ass in that category. Also the R8 has better feedback/response making it more desireable to drive.

Remember having more power is not always the best thing for a track car...ask Porsche. It is how the car handles, driving feedback, and how is puts that power on the track. Corvette has made a huge leap from the C4 to now...quantum leap!

Then theres the new GT-R. Looking foward to a comparo!!!

As for Bimmer, tell me another car make that builds a more fuel efficient 600+ HP Engine?!? ZR1 20+ MPG on Highway. Let hear it. Does BMW?

There has been talk of bmw producing a 600 6-series M in the next cycle of the 6-series. BMW is planning on making a luxury 6 model and a sport 6. If they go with this plan of attack, it might go directly against the ZR1

CTS-V has what GM is calling the 'LSA' which is basically the LS9 with a less aggressive supercharger and intercooler setup.

I just hope that this car has multiple suspension setting. The only real thing that I didn't like about the ZO6, was how stiff it was on the road. Everybody, else is offering it so I hope that GM does as well.

are you talking about dragging a regular r8 vs. a Z06 or the ZR1? Either way the corvette wins. The z06 is rated at 0-60 in 4.1 besting the r8 4.2, even if it is by a hair. The ZR1 will bet it by an even greater margin.

I think the clear hood is a feature guided by GM's desire for this car to compete with the best exotic cars in its class. Since cars like the Ferrari F430 (originated with the 360 Modena) and Audi R8 feature glass encasings for their mid-mounted engines to be seeen, I guess GM wanted to do someting similar with the Corvette, although the effect isn't quite the same with a car with a front engine and a glass section so small that not much of the actual engine is visible anyway.

ZR1 and the M6 do not compete at all! The only comparison is that they both have two doors and an engine! Someone in the market for a ZR1 would not consider the M6 an option because as powerful as the M6 is, it is too luxurious for someone who wants the top of the line Corvette.

You are correct sir. I believe the article was just stating the fact that GM was inspired by the entire industry, particularly BMW to increase its performance #'s and compete on the World stage and not just in the States. The CTS-V will compete with BMW.

BMW's V10 is a marvel of engineering and is the current benchmark in Luxury performance. Others will have to compete. This was a similar comparison for the LS600.

As a previous Audi S4 owner and current Z06 owner, I can say - from day to day experience - that the R8 is a more luxurious car for a daily driver. For track days - either road track or drag strip - the R8 will not keep up. It will have a slight advantage from a dig due to awd but then on the road course that weight becomes a ball and chain. Unless it's wet! And anyone that can only get a 4.1 sec 0-60 out of C6 Z06 is just smoking the tires for show. Even most car mags got 3.5 to 3.8 sec.

Yes the Z06 is stiffer than most but the handling is just unbelievable. Those that think Vettes can't handle are still referring to mid-70's vintage cars. The ZR1 combines the track readiness of the Z06 with a bit more comfort for day to day. Oh and about 120 extra HP.

C6 has exposed headlamps for the first time on a Corvette since 1962 and it was an obvious copy of the viper lamp design. Every time viper rose the HP GM followed. They didn't even look twice at any German car design. no twin or overhead cam, they stayed within the same design as the viper and you can call it old design or you want but if you get out the Oct. 07 R&T super car test the viper was the second fastest(Veyron) from 0-140 in 15.1 seconds while the Z-06 turned a whole second slower at 16.1. A whole second are quite a few car lengths. The Viper beat the V-12 Lambroginhini Murcielago LP640 (15.2) and both the vette and viper beat the $379,000 Lamb in the 1/4 and the 0-60 run. MB, Audi, etc weren’t mentioned because they are high HP granny cars that all have so much in common its those cars that mimic each other more than anyone. There are so many on the road I don't know if I'm looking at a Malibu or a MB, Audi or BMW. I went thru the phase with the German cars owning s6000 series, 335 and my wife has an A6 (a nice ladies car for the PTA and soccer mom. BMW, Audi and MB are going to do this and that but the viper is the first production car to run through the 1/4 mile traps at 125mph. The 1000 Hennessey slammed all in the R&T (Sept. 07) 0-200mph shootout, the SLR McLaren couldn't hit 200 while the others did including the Lingenffelter vette.

Why would you compare any MB, BMW, Audi sports sedans to a corvette or viper? This is meaningless.
Clearly these two are 100% track cars which are not going to be touched by ANY cars outside of $200K+ exotics (and maybe not even).

Sailnfl - The new Viper is pretty cool. But stock for stock most of the car mags have the Z06 right on it's heels and preferred as the one they would "buy". For 600HP I would have expected a bigger delta from the Z06. The headlight comment is really fishing, though. By your comment, the Viper copied the 62 Vette, right? HP wars are good for both of us, provided the car makers upgrade all the other parts of the car - brakes, suspension, etc.

I drove the Viper and it was fun and a head-turner but for my needs - occasional commuting on nice days - it was just not right. Plus it was $10K more. To each his own!! Enjoy!
