New Ford Taurus X Scores On Its Wagon Style Points

Ford Motor's (F) Taurus X is a worthy contender in the brutally competitive crossover SUV market. That's saying something because it's not a new design, yet in features and function it holds up well against recently launched models.

Taurus X hit the market as a 2005 model, under the name Freestyle. For '08, Ford mechanically modified the vehicle, cosmetically tweaked it and renamed it Taurus X because the boss, CEO Alan Mulally, thinks people will warm to a vehicle with the Taurus name as they didn't quite to the Freestyle.

The X in the name is supposed to suggest a four-wheel-drive, SUV version of the Taurus sedan (Test Drive, Aug. 17).

The X is based on the Volvo XC90 SUV, though it uses a wholly Ford powertrain. Ford owns Volvo.

It's always been a nice vehicle, but was previously underpowered.

Now that the hp issue has been resolved, I'd wager that many more families coming out of (less fuel efficient/garage friendly) SUVs will give it a second look...

i'm thinking ford must be losing money on these. they never promote them with advirtising, despite low sales. as an owner of a 6 year old explorer, some things hold me back. X is almost a foot longer, but the interior space is about the same. would have to give up the rwd bias/v8 combo too. just about all the X's locally are loaded limited models with nav, which means 36k+ sticker. only 3 mpg better rating than v8 explorer and doesn't have as good a 4wd setup.
gotta love it when you kid comes home and says 'dad that 4wd low works really good!'

Until you drop 1000 pounds and shift the CG of a V8 Explorer aft about 2.5 feet and down about one foot, it will always handle like an understeering pig on the road, and an overweight water buffalo off road.

I don't understand who actually thinks that a taller vehicle is a more versatile vehicle? The opposite is always true. The Explorer can do light duty on and off roads, but is the master of neither. It has less ground clearance than a Subaru Outback and a roll center that makes it horrid for any serious off-road duty. The only redeeming quality of the Explorer is that it can tow more than the Tau' wagon.

Unless you pull a trailer regularly, olscuul, trade your bloated ute in for a vastly superior wagon... either the Ford or the Subaru.

For some reason no matter how much a wagon is than a big SUV (aka all chevy suburban variants, GL, and ford expedition) people still buy the SUV. Hopefully cars like this can change that.
