2008 Detroit Auto Show: Lexus Unveils A Jaw Dropping LF-A Roadster Concept!

2008 Detroit Auto Show: Lexus Unveils A Jaw Dropping LF-A Roadster Concept!
The engineers and designers at Lexus continue to use their groundbreaking LF-A premium sports car concept as a medium for expressing their ideas about what a high-performance sporting vehicle not only can be, but should be. In this latest expression of the LF-A, they have removed the car's top to create a high-performance roadster. The LF-A Roadster is based on the sturdy yet lightweight carbon-fiber and aluminum body used for the LF-A coupe, which helps maintain the structure's strength and rigidity even without a top.

Like its coupe counterpart, the LF-A Roadster is powered by a high-revving V10 engine that approaches 5.0 liters in displacement. The V10, capable of more than 500 horsepower and test-track speeds greater than 200 mph, is mounted in front of the passenger compartment but behind the front-axle centerline in what the LF-A's engineers refer to as a "front-mid" configuration.

The engine is connected via a torque tube and propeller shaft to a transaxle that is controlled by paddle shifters. The torque tube is a structural member that adds rigidity to the drivetrain and chassis while also reducing vibration. Styling is rooted in the Lexus L-Finesse design philosophy, conferring the LF-A Roadster's front end with a compact, low-profile, aerodynamic shape. Like its coupe counterpart, the LF-A Roadster stands just 48 inches tall, but the Roadster configuration adds a speed adaptive rear wing.

The rear is marked by a pair of wrap-around, arrowhead-shaped taillights that bracket a pair of large grilles. These grilles vent the heated air from the car's two rear-mounted radiators into the LF-A Roadster's aerodynamic wake. The radiators are fed cool air by two large intake ducts mounted just above the rear wheel wells. This aft radiator positioning not only allowed the designers to keep the car's front profile low and tight but also aided the LF-A's chassis engineers in their search for optimal weight distribution.

Helping to provide balance and scale to the design, which features an overall length of 175.6 inches and a wheelbase of 102.6 inches, are high-performance tires on turbine-styled alloy wheels. The front tires are 265/35R20s, while the rears are 305/30R20s. Like the LF-A coupe, the brakes consist of 14.2-inch cross-drilled, vented discs up front, and 13.6-inch cross- drilled, vented discs at the rear. The front brake calipers are six-piston units and the rear calipers use four pistons each.

An "F" logo, located on each front fender of the Roadster, indicates the vehicle's status as a part of the new "F" marque. The name is derived from the original "F" designation for the first Lexus LS prototype. That vehicle was internally coded "Circle-F," with the "F" standing for "flagship." The Circle-F designation further evolved into the code name Flagship One, or F1, and the first F1 concept developed into Lexus' first vehicle, the LS. Since then, the "F" code has come to signify a special vehicle program within Lexus that falls outside the normal engineering and development process. In addition, Fuji Speedway is the IS F's home circuit, and the shape of the F-logo was inspired by many of the track's turns. The all-new Lexus IS F sport sedan is the first production vehicle to carry the F marque.

are you kidding? its just a LF-A coupe with the top cut off. this is nothing. "jaw dropping?" seriously. i would rather eat shards of glass, than have to look at this car.

This is going to kill lexus. the LF-A coupe is going to ruin lexus, the coupe is like a second SC.

Goodbye lexus, hello Hyundai.

3. "Goodbye lexus, hello Hyundai."

the term "hyundai is the new lexus" does not apply to the geniesis coupe... yet. but thats besides the point.

I'm the farthest thing from a Lexus fan and you would practically have to give me one for me to ever drive one again but this car is attractive. very unique design, japaneese in it's essence, much like the Furai concept, i like that, and i really respect that Lexus has not tried to design it like every other supercar, and followed their own philosophy. Overall the car looks gracious and quite beautiful actually, not a brute at all. Although we know it has bullish strength with that 500 hp engine underneath. An exotic product indeed, because it is distinct and stands upright on its own.

Just in! The prices for the BMW M3 have been released: the sedan starts at 54K and the coupe at 57K. Mind blowing! The M3 sedan sells for $15K less than the more modest competitor RS4 sedan. Link

It's a $12K difference.

Who said the RS4 was more modest? You?

Audi RS4 base MSRP is 68725. The BMW M3 sedan is 54700. I guess the difference is only $14K!!!!!
And stop being stuck in the Audi world. In the real world the M3 is by far the superior car.

"In the real world the M3 is by far the superior car."

You are an idiot. I'm in the market for both, and I'll tell you my findings. How do you know the RS4 isn't superior for ME? What if I want AWD? What if I prefer the Audi's styling? The interior? What if the next (B8) RS4, the one I'll be looking at, has significantly more power than the M3?

I love the new M3, but it's fools like you who make me stay away.

No, you are an idiot! Audi whore! Who cares what fits you? You are insignificant...The BMW M3 is the better choice for the car enthusiasts and this is all that counts.

id rather pay the extra 14k and get the rs4. the people that drive these cars actually do believe that they are superior which makes the cars EVEN more unappealing (to me)..i know MOST people like the m3 and most bmws but I dont like the way they look. that is THE most important thing that i look for in a car..and as far as interiors..bmw gets a 0

If this is true, that makes the M3 sedan a great value.

But I thought the RS4's base is $64K, so $54K for the M3 is $10K less, not $14K less, but still a great saving.

A little over done and still has some cartoonish elements to it. At least it's not melting as bad as the SC or the Solara...eek! The red makes it look very plastic.

Looks like Toyota threw a 350Z and an S2000 into a blender and came up with the LFA convertible. Both are great cars, so this isn't intended as an insult. Definitely a nice car, just not something able to compete with the Ferraris and Lamborghinis of the world. Unfortunately it appears as though the more extreme elements of the LFA coupe design have been watered down a bit. As for those that think the rear end goes too far I vehemently disagree. I applaud any designer willing to take chances and introduce something unique and new. If you don't like it, then you have plenty of conservatively designed cars to choose from.

The deboosting Lexus fanboys are just too funny. I quite like the LF-A coupe, but you can't tell me that the 3/4 front profile of this car doesn't look like a slightly altered 350z and the straight front shot doesn't look like an updated S2000. I'm sure most of you fan boys will reflexively deboost in denial rather than take the time to google images of the other cars from the angles I'm referring to. You do realize to disagree only reveals your bias-induced blindness or ignorance of automotive design. Now feel free to deboost away and reaffirm your stupidity.

Didn't mean to offend you, Goob...

The similarity that I noticed is in the angle in which the windscreen meets the hood, the flatnees of the hood, and how the badge is on the nose of the front end, not on a grille. Do I think that they will ever be mistaken, no, but that doesn't mean that they share certain aspects that may remind me of one another. This doesn't take anything away from the LF-A, so don't be so damned defensive, noob.

It's the BMW 128/135 that seems to have a butt inspired by the 1991 Hyundai Elantra, and if more individuals would take a second to open their eyes instead of their mouths, they'd see it too.

For GoObama08, who clearly lacks judgement in automotive design and politics, here is a picture of a 350Z. Compare to the LF-A pic at the top of the article. Note the clear similarity in the slope of the hood, general size and shape of the headlight cluster and the grill size and placement. Exactly the same? Of course not. But only a moron of your caliber would deny the similarity.

As a 20+ year aeronautical/mechanical engineer, specializing in composite structures, I have to ask...

What Are You Talking About?

There is no way (from looking at the pics provided) to determine from what substrate/composite this vehicle has been fabricated since is has been (quite nicely) painted with a very high quality high-solids polyurethane coating topped with several clear-coats.

If you genuinely don't like the design, then fine. But we don't need to hear you repeat that seventeen times. Let us enjoy this car in peace.

HOWEVER, I don't think that's true of most of the haters on here. They are just saying how "trashy" and "cheap" it looks over, and over, and over, in vain. I think that, deep down, they want this car...
