Detroit Auto Show: Ford Explorer America Concept Revealed (live images)

Ford today revealed the Explorer America Concept at the 2008 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Ford ditched the body-on-frame built for a unibody construction, reducing weight across the lineup (150 pounds for the V6 version).

Fuel-economy has also been improved by an approximate 20 to 30 percent depending on engine selection. The powertrain lineup includes a 4-cylinder 2.0L engine with EcoBoost technology producing 275 horsepower and a range topper 3.5L V6 delivering about 340 horsepower.

Yep - a concept that is friggin awesome, yet is likely never to make it into production....especially given Ford's financial condition

Remember the extremely cool Bronco concept from a few years back? Of course, it dissappeared never to be seen again. Probably for the best as Ford would've no doubt watered it down to utter crap in production form. Oh, but we did get the Ford Freestyle! Gee, I wonder why Ford is on the brink of extinction.

Is that all they could wring out of the body on frame version? That's rather pathetic of the engineers if that's the best they can do going to a unitized construction. They should have lowered the weight by 500 lbs. minimum.

Is it just me or does Ford come out with concepts that will in no way reflect anything close to what they will actually produce. Not only that but the technologies they put into them rarely make it into new vehicles either.

Another potential winner like the Bronco, but you will never see it on the streets. Just keep doin what your doin Ford and watch that marketshare slide. Especially since GM took car of the year from the Detroit show, and 6 of their models made it in the finals.

I's hate to meet most of you in person you are so depressing and negative. This product looks hot! I like it, and I bet they make it soon. I also like the look of that new small B car too, I bet they hit it out of the park with that as well. I'm liking their engine technology plan it sounds good and the intro of the small diesel is good too. Wake up you negative people the Domestic car industry is engineering itself out of its doldrums. You guy should get out of your old import cars that look like crap and try driving one.
