If that is indeed the case, all the strides the GM have made in the last few years will have been in vain, because I don't see the average consumer willing to accept those kinds of increases so rapidly...

Especially for a GM product.

Its all just an excuse for them wanting to charge MORE!

I am curious to know how this affects all the other automakers.

Will he ever stop whining about CAFE? With the ridiculous credit for E85 and CAFE's use of old methods of testing, the new standards have no teeth ayway. Between his crying anout CAFE and lying about the Volt, I think Lutz has lost all respect.

First of all, the $6000 cost of pollution equipment will go in gradually for the next 15 yrs - not next year or even 3 yrs from now. 2nd, this is what happens when the big government, socialist Democrats influence things like auto mileage standards. More to come if you folks try to vote in politicians that like to regulate in a huge way - ie Hillary and Obama.

Maybe they have to cut a monetary deal with the unions as a fine for every car and diesel engine they import to the US, like the new saturns and RWD pontiacs coming soon. I suspect that $6000 (if it is true) has to do with the Union, not cost of technology.

Well if you make all the big trucks and SUV's diesels that will increase the prices on those cars but not by 6 grand a car. If GM can't produce a diesel for less then 6 grand over a standard gasoline car they should not be in the car business.The average diesel price should be no more then $1500 over the cost of a gasoline car.2nd I also don't think that GM can pass on the cost of making cars more aerodynamically efficient or taking a little bit of weight out of the cars.What is Lutz smokin?

he's just trying to spread panic to buy before 2011 models to get gm through the economic downturn so his stock options won't be worthless when he retires. plus he is going for the glory of better than expected sales under his watch.

If they raise the price of a chev vehicle that much everyone will buy a Japanese vehicle!
Good thinking Bob! The teck has been around for a while, maybe the $6,000. is going to the gas companies? Just a consperacy theory?

I believe that is a little high. WIth the amount of vehicles GM sells I assumed the increase would be $2K at most.

I know the cost of R&D, producing an entirely new line of motors, and emissions upgrades is high and not an easy task for a LARGE business. I am also curious how Toyota and other makes cope with this. Fortunately for Toyota they had better forth sight and may not be as big of an impact.

I am more worried about high end Sports cars, Porsche, Ferrari, etc...cost rising.
