Dumb Luck or Creative Numbers? Both GM And Toyota Tie In Global Sales

One of the most hotly contested topics for 2007 was if Toyota could topple GM  76 reign as the largest automaker in the world.  The results are in and just like a good spy novel we may have a twist ending. We have a virtual tie!

 As you are probably aware Toyota announced earlier this month that it has sold 9.37 million vehicles in 2007. A remarkable figure globally. The GM figures arrived this morning, and their total was interestingly enough 9.37 million vehicles sold as well.  Actually the total for GM was 9,369,524 vehicles, but the exact figures for Toyota down to the last car haven’t been released as far as we can tell, and rarely are.

 So we have to leave it up to our “Spies in Training“ out there, to poke around with their resourcefulness and see if and exact sales figure for Toyota is out there, residing well hidden in a report somewhere.  Because if these figures never surface then the biggest question for 2008 will be, who is the biggest automaker in the world, GM or Toyota?

btw another report released about an hour ago has GM in the lead.

"DETROIT (Reuters) - General Motors Corp on Wednesday reported worldwide sales of 9.37 million vehicles in 2007, coming in just ahead of Japanese rival Toyota Motor Corp in a closely watched race for the top spot in global sales.

GM, which was expected to lose its title of the world's largest automaker for the first time in 76 years, sold 9,369,524 vehicles in 2007. Toyota sold about 9,366,000 units, a source told Reuters on Wednesday.

The Japanese automaker earlier this month publicly announced global sales of 9.37 million for 2007, saying it would disclose more precise figures in late January.

GM said its total global sales rose 3 percent from a year earlier, driven by strong growth in regions outside North America."

All of the negative comments we make about toyota/lexus def. does not affect their sales. Obviously a huge number of ppl find them to be appealing. Congrats Toyota for a job well done.

with fuel prices rising, i see Toyota leading from now on as they have and make more small and fuel efficient cars compare to GM's most sales which are still gas guzzler Trucks, SUVs and big engine cars.

Might want to check those Toyota figures again they are heavy too, but not nearly as heavy as GM:

2007 Toyota Brand Sales:
Truck Sales: 977,997
Car Sales: 1,313,651

GM Sales:
Truck Sales: 2,377,207
Car Sales: 1,489,413

Automotive News is declaring it the World's Largest Automaker in 2007 based on the fact that GM included some 516,435 sales from the Chinese Wuling brand. GM only owns 34 percent of Wuling, the majority of which is owned by SAIC. Normally automakers don't report sales for brands in which they don't own a majority interest (that's why Mazda sales are not reported by Ford),

dont forget all of the rental and fleet vehicles gm sold. take that away and toyota wins. more consumers buy toyotas businesses buy gm because they are cheaper.
