Audi A5 Sportback (4 door coupe) to debut in 2009
Mercedes has the CLS, Volkswagen just unveiled the Passat CC, but what about Audi? Is time for them to have a word to say on the luxury four-door coupe market as well! And they will, starting 2009, when the brand will launch the Sportback version of the A5 Coupe. But this will be just the beginning: a Sportback version will also follow for the A7 in 2010 and for the A3 in 2011.

The A5 Sportback will be based on the A4/A5 platform and will be a mix of the two: front of the A5 and middle of the A4, the wheelbase will be the same as for the A4, the width as the A5; length will be between coupe and sedan.

There will also be a S5 Sportback and later on a RS5.

Under the hood the A5 Sportback there will be:

1.8 TFSI, 160 hp / 250 Nm
2.0 TFSI, 180 hp / 320 Nm
2.0 TFSI, 211 hp/ 350 Nm
3.2 V6 FSI, 265 hp /330 Nm
2.0 TDI, 143 hp /320 Nm
2.0 TDI, 170 hp/350 Nm
2.7 V6 TDI, 190 hp/380 Nm
3.0 V6 TDI, 240 hp/500 Nm

Quattro will be standard option for the big diesel engine and an option for the 170-hp TDI and for the two biggest gas engines.

this is becoming absurd. a coupe means 2 doors! not 4! i dont know how the heck Mercedes got the "4door coupe" slang to become so popular...."(guy number1)yo man! i own a sports coupe!" "(#2)....no you have a sports sedan....hence the 4 doors". i can see this turning into an actual argument lol

I agree. Coupe = 2 doors.

The only 4 door coupe is RX-8.

Will somebody please tell Audi that 265hp in a premium Sports coupe/sedan isn't going to cut-it. What the hell is wrong with Audi? They make the nicest cars and then nuder them with weak, harmless, lifeless engines. If an Audi doesn't have 2 seats, an "S", or an "RS" badge on it, then expect mediocre back-of-the-back performance.

A nice interior can only take you so far. One day Audi is going to have to offer decent performance in a car that cost less than $50,000. A V6 Honda Accord (From 2005) will outperform any A5 now an in the foreseeable future. That is pathetic.

I think you better start getting used to the idea of smaller engines. GM and Ford are going to be using small engines with turbos. In 5 yrs the V8 and high performance NA V6 engines will be relics of the past.Smaller engined 6 and 4 cylinder turbos will be the wave of the future along with diesels.

I do not like the CLS or any other of the copy cats (BMW CS, Jaguar XF, Passat). Cars like this defy logic for me. The new A4/5 look nice enough but Audi desperately needs new engines. The competition offers so much more performance without the handicap of Quattro.

It wont look too far from this IMO.

Huh? This doesn't make sense, for two reasons:

Why would it be called the A5 Sportback? There would be no point to that. Are they going to make it a hatchback A4 or its own model? IMO it should definitely be called the A7! It should compete DIRECTLY with the CLS, which any A5 variant would not do, and it should be standard with at least 300hp! This is stupid, and I hope it's not true.

I hope this is not true for Audi's sake. They have the A4 for this market, they do not need an A5 4door coupe. And the A5 should only be in 2 door form.
Audi does need an A7 which would compete with the 6series and CLS.
What the heck is VW management thinking?

I think (hope) it's just topspeed.com saying this, not Audi itself.

Ok buddy. You do realize Audi has a 420 hp V8, a 435/450 hp V10, a 580 hp V10? BMW has a 230 hp 3.0 I6 wiht only 215 lb-ft of torque, how many generations ago is that?

"that silly 354 HP s4 engine is just embarassing in that class."

Which class? #1, it's the S5. The new S4 will be getting a twin-turbo V6. #2, the S5 is in a class of one. It's the ~450hp RS5 that will be competing with the M3.

audi has so many different models coming out but they don't any different from on another i don't see a lot of new customers buying a A5 or A7, they look just like the A4, A6 and A8 with a lower rear passenger windows and trunk. Also these cars compete with the new VW CC. Also with the Q5 being so late to the market audi will not gain a lot of new customers from the USA, so much product overlap.

"this should be a min 500 non turbo output- poor engineering again"

Damn, you're an idiot. Audi DE-TUNED that engine. If the S6/S8 had over 500hp, THERE WOULD BE NO ROOM FOR THE RS6. Isn't it OBVIOUS that they can make much more power out of that engine, when they have a 100hp/L engine in the RS4???

As for the RS6... it is rumored to have over 600hp. You know how the 335i appears to be underrated in power? Apply that logic to the RS6, and voilĂ . But if Audi made it more powerful than it is, it would be scary fast. TOO fast for a sedan, really.

The 420 horsepower V8 does double duty in the RS4 and R8 amazinIdiot.

Audi should not make the S6 and S8 with a 500 horsepower V10 because the "S" models are not designed to compete with BMW's M or Mercedes AMG lineups.... hence the much lower horsepower and acceleration figures for all Audi "S" cars compared to the BMW M and Benz AMG cars. ALso if the S6 and S8 V10 was upgraded to 500 horsepower the RS6 would be even more expensive than it is right now and Audi's "S" cars would be too expensive.

Third amazinIdiot, can you explain to me how the comparable engines from M and AMG are better than Audi's 580 horsepower twin-turbo V10???? More powerful??? Sorry, the M5 is down 80 horsepower according to the media and in reality 100 horsepower to the Audi RS6. The Benz E63 AMG also trails in power by a large margin to the new RS6.

420 horsepower V8 in the Audi R8 is real poor engineering I take it. It only does 0-60 in 3.9 seconds with dry-sump, valvelift, S-tronic etc..

No shit Larry, the A5 is not out yet.... no wonder you don't see any people buying them. The A7 is a year away you idiot.

Larry, you uninfomrred moron, the Audi Q7 was late to the SUV game by about 4 years and look at how well it is selling.

How does a performance coupe overlap with a sedan, LArry?? Secondly, how ddoes a mini-SUV overlap with the large Q7??

Get a clue you idiot Larry, Audi is on a roll.....

The gap is closing rapidly against Mercedes and in 5 years Audi will be number two in global annual sales for premium luxury auto manufacturers.

Typical Audi. All cars looking same and no new engines.

This for example is just a strecthed low roofline A4 or an A5 with two more doors.

Because you already know about the engine lineup, right?

And you also know that this is EXACTLY what it will look like, because it's not a photoshop, right?

Tool.

An RS5 Sportback sounds tempting to see.
