Elderly Drivers In The UK May Face IQ Tests To Maintain Licenses
Motorists over the age of 75 could have to sit an IQ test to stay on the road, it has been reported.

The exams are designed to measure whether an elderly driver is mentally up to it or will be a danger on the road.

OAPs will not have to retake their practical driving test  but new barriers will include an eyesight exam.

Ministers are understood to be keen to ban anyone over 75 who does not pass the exams and will make them repeat the series of IQ tests every five years to continue driving.

An IQ test is not a measure of how quick your reaction time is. Sounds like a plot on the part of the UK government to reduce the number of vehicles on the road especially in London.

A timed IQ test will indeed judge reaction and speed of thought. At least it's a step in the right direction.

I'm tired of seeing news articles that go like," An elderly woman thought she pushed the brake but hit the gas instead. Consequently running into a store window."

You couldn’t get away with that in the United States- plain and simple. It is probably, so long as the actual ability to drive is demonstrated, an ex post facto law- which are explicitly prohibited by the Constitution. There is no relationship between general intelligence and the ability to drive plain and simple. There are autistic people who score exceptionally high in spatial cognitive type IQ tests, yet plainly do not have the ability the drive. The reason that they give you a driving test along with an eye exam is that those things are directly related to one’s ability to drive. If you pass those tests, then you should be able to drive.

In the United States your rights are not a meritocracy- so long as you have the capacity to execute them then there are no contingencies. End of discussion.

To the person who deboosted me I have only this to say: where this type of system applied fully, I have no doubt that you would be one of the first to be denied.

But the US does need this so bad. I was coming up a road the other day, and I admit I do 35-40 on most backroads like normal people. But this lady was not doing 30 or the 25 posted speed limit. She was going 10! 10 miles per hour. up a hill. So I gunned it went around her and was just blown away.

But you could say the same for the people who go 30-40mph up a highway on ramp. It's actually called a speed ramp so that you have time to get up to the speed of traffic to merge. And when people are doing 60-70 in the slow lane and you get on doing 40, your asking for trouble. Especially since everyone behind you needs to brake to find a spot now and gun it to try and match speed with no room to do so.

But I do believe that this would be beneficial in the US. You hear too much of people getting hit by elderly running onto sidewalks or into stores, all because they accidentally hit the gas instead of the brake, which is not so bad if they were able to catch themselves quick enough. But they panic and stomp the gas even harder making a huge issue. FYI when a light turns green, your supposed to go.

But how does, what is essentially an I.Q. test solve that problem? For such a test to solve the problem, the problem must be the result of what the test looks for. How is driving slow related to general intelligence- which is what such spatial congnitive tests do.
