Garmin partners with BMW for custom nuvi docking stations

Garmin has worked out with BMW where Garmin will produce custom navigation systems for the BMW 1 and 3-Series based on their Nuvi 360. BMW will offer its customers a special docking station on the car’s instrument panel for the Nuvi navigation system, avoiding any cables or wires running to and from the cigarette lighter.

‘includes a customized mounting bracket that allows owners to mount the nüvi directly to the interior trim on the instrument panel, rather than to the windshield via a suction cup mount like traditional Garmin portable navigation systems...

I compared the after market NAV systems at Radio Shack to the one in my '07 Lexus. The verdict:
The Lexus model comes out 2nd best by a wide margin. The After market models do a lot more, and are a lot easier to use, and of course, are a lot cheaper. Frankly, the Lexus model stinks.

thank you...no one tells you to buy the option. i prefer the OEM unit due to its 5" plus size and also that it is integrated into the dash.

i like the aftermarket units, but i do not like the fact that i have only a 3.5" or less screen view, also the fact that i have to stick it to my windhsield altering some vision. and the fact that those circular spots are signs for a burgular to break-in to my vehicle.

so long as i can afford the option of the OEM units...and take the time to read the manual that comes with the vehicle for me to use it...it will be a feature i opt for instead of the aftermarket unit.

I have an aftermarket unit in my Honda and the factory unit in my Mercedes. I like the factory model more just because I don't have to worry about anyone breakin in and taking it, I don't have to worry about wires hanging from my dashboard and the COMMAND is more up to date than my Magellan. Obviously it cost quite a bit more but I just didn't want anything suction cupped to the windsheild of my Benz. I do think the Magellan is a handy little device though. Comes in handy when I travel and rent cars. Its also very easy to use and doesn't have a bunch of little sub menus like Command. It really depends on the person and type of car to me. For the honda its fine.
T
