An aluminum chassis is not economical in a model priced like the x-type. Jaguar has said that it wants to maintain a four model line-up, but has also stated that there will be no more cheap cars. The x-type will be removed from the American market in March. This car I would imagine, will replace the x-type not in terms of its market segment, but in terms of the quantity of models.

Ian Callum recently revealed that the x-type was forced upon Jaguar by Ford and was even designed in Detroit. A leaping cat hood ornament does not a Jaguar make.

cdoke, the x-type is overpriced enough that it might just as well have an aluminum body. Anyway, we are talking about a new 2-seater coupe here (attracts a premium price) so the small cost difference between aluminum and steel is not relevant. An aluminum body does not rust which is a tremendous benefit to the customer and helps to sell the car at a premium price. Reduced body weight improves fuel economy -- another small benefit.

Yes, and it's pretty obvious that this is an XK with new XF styling cues. I like it very much, although I'm guessing the E-Type will look pretty different.

Journalists have been comparing it to the E-type and the F-type. The reason is that it is expected to be a true two-seater sports car as opposed to the "2+2" layout of the XK.

Given Jaguar's continued advancement with their aluminum platforms there is great potential for this idea.

the rendering of autocar is just crass wrong. That looks ugly with XF front styling. Trust me the car will have much more grace and looks than this rendering.

Yes they are.I do think at one point they should do a little restyling to the XK front end. Saying that it's a great car.I hope that Tata puts in ennough funds to really fund these future models.Jaguar desrves it. Ford did do some good things to Jaguar.Most notably it greatly improved quality and reliability. The big mistake was the X-type built off the Mondeo chassis,essentially a Ford Contour with a Jaguar body. This was a huge mistake. Also Jaguar's insistance on staying retro with design.Having a car to compete with the 911 I think is a good move as the the original XKE competed with the original 911. But there should not be too much overlaping with models. I mean if they do a coupe version of the XF then whats the point of the XK unless that model metamorphs into a smaller lighter 911 competitor. Also the XJ is supposed to take on more of the styling of the Mercedes CLS so there is no need for 4DR coupe as another model. Right now Jaguar is too small a car company to be worrying about overlapping niche models. Rationaly a 4 model stratigy makes the most sense. The XJ,the XF,The XF coupe (replacing the XK) and the 911 sportscar fighter. If these(and only if these are successful then Jaguar should think about an X-type successor. My guess is that it should come from the same but shortened paltform of the XF either in a sedan or wagon.

An XF coupe replacement the excellent XK design? Never gonna happen. That's like saying that the 6 series is overlapped by the 3 series coupe/conv.

I hope TATA scraps whatever is on the drawing board and starts over if the XF is any indicator. At the San Francisco and San Jose Auto Shows the XF drew no attention at all while the XK drew a few while BMW and Mercedes were swamped with people.
