one can say Maybach has "more heritage" than Lexus, even tho' it was raised from the dead. but even tho' it costs more than the rebadged Mercs they are derived from, how much "heritage and prestige" does it REALLY have? little more than zip, except for mb worshippers with a bit more money than brains.

and it STILL is not comparable to the TOYOTA Century, with its v12 motor and interior comparable to Rolls Royce.

it was conceived and put in production more than a decade before the current Maybach. production figures have always been limited, so it is MORE EXCLUSIVE than ANY other luxury car, including RR. (which itself was headed for extinction, like the original maybach, before being rescued by bmw. no, make that Volkswagen! LOL!)

the Century was originally built as a car for the japanese Imperial Family. and a few more were built for diplomats, statemen, and high level corporate execs. it always was, and always will be, a distinctive and EXCLUSIVE luxury car.

They should base it off the IS platform (a la G35 = EX35 which is really a G-Wagon) But they will probably use the same RX platform tucked up a bit.

That's exactly why the new cute-ute will happen when it does. It has nothing to do with the EX or GLK, and everything to do with the fact that the RX has to grow before there is a need for a vehicle below it. Since the RX architecture (yes, the Avalon-Highlander platform) has grown, the RX WILL be bigger next year. Lexus will now need a vehicle to slot in below.

Remember how when the X3 came out eveyone said what is the point, it is almost the size of an X5 (and I believe it had more cargo capacity). But then the X5 finally grew. Well, Lexus is obviously just waiting instead of having an overlap.

Just like those German Auto Corp Execs, always at those Lexus press debuts at the Autoshow year in and year out especially at the North American International Aito Show...for what reason? a loaded up camry SE or avalon will match or beat ANY mb within $5 - 15k of its price. AND be far more reliable, within AND out of the warranty period.

the 4Runner is head and shoulders above ALL its competitors. no way it could NOT be, being based on the Tacoma, THE leader in compact p/us too.

it also leads in style, having the most distinctive profile with a rakish C-pillar. even the benz MLs have shamelessly copied the 4Runner's c-pillar.

SIX of my WOMEN friends have/had 4Runners. one was the original from the '80s, with 2 doors and a removable roof. one is a '93 with 240,000 miles and still going strong. these trucks are near indestructible.

the ONLY downside, is that yeah, they do suck down the gas!

the RAV4 would be a great alternative, like you say. even the 4-cyl model, if still offered.

note that BOTH the toyota and lexus versions of the reknown Land Cruiser are highly successful.

buyers of the lexus version DON'T CARE that they have basically a toyota with leather and all the lux goodies. nothing in its class can touch the Land Cruiser.

if anything, i think more of the lexus version gets sold every year. at least in the u.s.

similarly, if there is a lexus version of the RAV4, i doubt lexus buyers will care. if ANY vehicle is to be rebadged, there are NO BETTER BRAND vehicles than toyota to base a rebadge on. even GM recognized that, with their various versions of the corolla and matrix. (and honda learned that rebadging Isuzus was not the best idea they had.)
