Next BMW 7-series to get advanced dual-image display

Alpine are a Japanese company. I'm a BMW enthusiast but you've got to give credit where credits due.

This is Japanese Technology developed by Toyota Motor and Fujitsu-ten . Toyota Alphard adopted this tech in Japan 2005.9.26 .Japanese supplier still dominate car navigation system .

Pretty cool...now let's see if they can make a touch screen that figure out if you're the driver or the passenger...ya idrive isn't touch. just a thought

neither is Audi's system BullfrogS4, and I hate to break it to you but the word "touchscreen" doesn't automatically mean "better". They have their own faults. First, there's more glare on touchscreens because the screens have to be exposed for you to reach them (you'll never have trouble seeing the screen in a MB S-class or any BMW w/ iDrive, because they're shrouded). Secondly, and this is the big one -- despite the commonly help misconception that you can just hop in a car with a touchscreen and within 10 seconds use the system like a pro you DO STILL have to learn the interface, just like you do iDrive, MMI, COMAND, etc. A touchscreen is not "magic", you have to learn them too.

Other disadvantages of touchscreen's are that you have to take your eyes off the road for longer to use them, as they are usually mounted lower to be within reach of the driver. Also they get dirty and require constant cleaning due to finger print marks.

I wasn't trying to say that idrive sucks, that touch screens are the way to go, or that Audi has the best system (imo i think mb does). I was just think that the next logical progression of this technology would be to develop a dual-interface touch screen.

And who's to say that it's gotta be used for the front seats? Could be used in the rear as well, who knows?

Just a clarification, the article suggests that BMW's next 7 MIGHT have this new screen design.

they don't user AM or FM frequencies in japan do they?

I also remember hearing that when a used japanese car is imported from japan to the west, radios are dismounted before importing.

And they will be expensive...all those angled pixels...that's a lot of work.

It's like those billboards on I-95...one image for Northbound, another for South. (Electronic, not the static ones that have been around forever).

Agree 100%, I own a touch screen tablet pc and I love the touch screen/pen. I'm glad for this tech. transfer to this gizmo.

I actually think this would be useful. I own the current 7 and the iDrive can be so iritating when switching between Nav, climate, Entertainment, and Communication, because whoevers riding shotgon always wants a different menu than i do. This might actually be safer, and help alleviate a lot of arguements.
