Subaru Considers High Performance Diesel WRX Variants

Japanese maker Subaru may introduce a diesel-powered version of its hot hatch WRX.

Subaru's first diesel engine has just gone on sale in its Liberty medium car in Europe and has won rave reviews. Britain's respected motoring weekly Autocar went so far as to say it may indeed be the best diesel it had ever driven.

At this week's Australian launch of the high-performance version of the WRX, the Subaru STI (pictured), Subaru's executives said they were considering a diesel version of the Liberty, and that the engine could appear in a performance model similar to the WRX.

Subaru, how about giving me a normally aspirated H6 diesel version of the 2009 Forester and how about making the STI available with automatic.

only in japan, theres a legacy thats "tuned by sti" (pretty hot!) with a stick or auto avail. though not in diesel.

Normally aspirated diesel??? You don't want that - a 2500 red line? Sluggish isn't the word - nobody even makes non turbo diesels anymore (VW used to but stopped I think)

and don't forget that diesels and turbos work much better than with gas engines because they can take high compressions (correct me if I'm wrong).

I'll gladly take a diesel WRX if they would give us back the last gen body style. The new STI looks way too much like a Lexus RX350.
