Well said zairnaim! If and when Toyota can create a diesel for the US, joshie will be singing it's praises. Maybe Toyota's diesel in their Lexus brand will be like their hybrids, overhyped, overpriced, and can't acheive the MPG as their gas counterparts. Then again, Toyota may just use Subaru's diesels, place it in their cars and claim victory!

Great car, great engine, looks like a corolla, a more agressive look from acura or lexu would do the trick though.

Yeah another reason to spend more on a VW that fits into the same class as the Corolla/Civic/Sentra with more quality issues and now it burns diesel which costs more, woohoo. The benefit currently of having a diesel car is not as marvelous as we think. The cost per gallon of diesel vs. the mpg gets very minute when scaled down. Almost the same as driving another few miles to get $.05 cheaper gas.

Sorry, I have hated the new Jetta since day one when they went away from its roots and offered this thing.

For the first time, they compared cars with the same MILEAGE rather than AGE. Since Toyotas are bought by people who don't really like to drive, and German cars are generally bought by folks who drive a lot, the age tests were testing high-mileage german cars against low-mileage Japanese cars.

Too bad JD Powers doesn't have enough brains to take factors like this into consideration.

PS: If you were old enough, you would remember that VW built cars in the US, but quit because they couldn't get American workers to produce at a satisfactory quality level.

Seriously, one of my engineers, who has a 2003 Golf TDI, figures that around 400,000 kms (1/4 million miles) his fuel savings (compared to a GAS Golf) will have paid for the purchase price of CDN$28,000 (his is loaded)
NOTE: He always drove Japanese cars in the past, but doesn't feel safe in them now after driving a German car.

And even in Canada, with snow and salt, its not unusual to see used Jettas and Golfs for sale with > 400,000 kms.
i've seen VW Diesels for sale in Oregon with > 800,000 miles!

Do you have a single piece of evidence that supports your (fake) claim that the IS220d is cleaner than Audi's TDIs? Didn't think so. In fact Lexus has no 50 state diesels planned, Audi and VW do.

The Jetta TDI will be quite a bit quicker than the Prius. The expected EPA fuel economy ratings can possibly make it the most fuel efficient vehicle in America. And go ahead and stick a paper towel in some hybrid's exhausts, it will be dirty. No such thing with the new Jetta TDI. The Jetta TDI should start at right around 20,000 in the US.

Why did Volvo diesels all have VW engines, and not Toyota engines.

In fact the IS220d is the most polluting and has the worst mileage in its class, with Co2 emissions of (all manual models):
IS220d: 168g/km
320d: 128
A4 2.0tdi: 144
Merc C220cdi: 156
And Imperial MPG of:
IS220d: 44.8
BMW 320d: 58.9
A4 2.0tdi: 51.4
Merc C220cdi: 46.3
So in fact what you said was a complete lie.

Now that I'm done ripping on "JoshLexus4Ever", I'm excited that I will soon get a chance to drive one even though that I would prefer that they introduce a Passat TDI in U.S. first or shortly after.

I guess facts are not important to you at all.

EPA tests cars on a dyno, indoors (actual speed, 0 MPH).
I drive on real roads and freeways, my 8 year old TDI still gets 53 MPG, and my biggest Peev is the Toyota Prius: slowest car on the road (oh yeah, they drive so slow so they can coax 40 MPG out, while you can drive a TDI like you stole it, and still never get as low as 40 MPG)

I can't wait for the Jetta Sport-wagon, like the one at Sema last October. But my wife wants a Touareg TDI so we can haul a travel trailer. (haven't seen many Prius pulling trailers, yet in the UK the top-pick for trailer towing is the Passat TDI with AWD, something we can't buy here, unfortunately)

That's the old A4, not the new one, which is now on sale.

regarding the "25% more oil" point, i've read that before but doubt it. there should be a consistent premium reflected in the price, adjusting for other influences, if it were true.

i dumped the historical data for gas and diesel from may/02 - dec/07 into excel and as you can see, the differences in the cost of crude and refining are not that significant (no where near 25%) relative to the differences in taxation and dist/marketing.
