In an effort to stay strong in the U.S. and an ambitious plan to increase sales to 800,000 by 2018, Volkswagen is looking to offer its models to the North American market at cheaper prices. When we saw the Volkswagen Passat CC at the 2008 Detroit Auto Show, we were afraid that if pricing was over $35k, it may follow in the ill-fated footsteps of the Phaeton.

the CC looks like a pretty attractive deal but let's not forget that the Genesis can be ordered with a 300 hp DOHC V8 and the Genesis has RWD with LSD.

German engineering, beautiful style for under $27K??? I might have to consider tradin in the Prius for this one (maybe not, but close). I will be quite impressed if they can pull that one off. Geez, a Jetta almost hits that price. Maybe Volkswagen has finally figured out the key to success in the US, and where they should position themselves in the market. I mean has anyone seen their prices lately?? I test drove the Eos several times this summer, but just could not justify paying over 30K for a 4 cylinder compact.

The front of the car is OK.Certainly the sides and rear make this car.Overall quite attractive. The've got it price right.It should be a hot seller.If this is a prelude to what's coming from VW their future looks bright.Now they have to work on their reliability,especially for the cars made at Puebla.

From a reliable internal VW source:

I wasn't given a time-frame but "over the next few years" seems reasonably accurate.

New Jetta styled more like the previous car than the current one. Goodbye Passat for a few years, then a reintroduction as a higher-end, gap-bridging vehicle between the CC and the new Phaeton.

Opinions on the potential for a new Phaeton? I'm not convinced...

Wow, nice! I'm very impressed!

They're finally getting it. I can imagine so many family car buyers opting for this if they want a big, comfortable, capable sedan with some sexy.

I don't know. $27,000 for the CC puts it close to the $29,000 BMW 1-series. But the VW does have 4 doors to the BMW 2.

Another DUD by VW, this car has weak mechanicals, it will not sell any better than the current Passat which is a DUD. Trying to look like a bargain priced CLS Mercedes which is ugly and not selling very well. I do not understand this rush to build 4 door coupes. I don't care for this or the new BMW or XF Jaguar. A passing fad I hope.

I agree with finishline above that the car will be 27k base with a 2.0T engine (which is still a really good engine matched with DSG), but for those that are looking to load up and want the AWD 300hp V6, it would be well into the 30s. Especially if they are trying to slot this above the current Passat (which in fully loaded form, is already 30s), then I wouldn't be surprised if a loaded CC gets close to 40k.

27K for a 4-cylinder engine is a bit much. Lets wait and see how much more the V6 is.
