Will The BMW 135 Be The 2008 Car Of The Year?

Will The BMW 135 Be The 2008 Car Of The Year?
It's amazingly cool to drive the new BMW M3 but we were just as excited to test drive the BMW 1-Series cars today, for the first time in the USA.

The awesome power, aggressive looks and bang for the buck say leading candidate for the 2008 Car of the Year in our opinion.

On sale in the spring of 2008, the 1 Series Coupe will be available in two versions: the 128i (starting at $29,375) and the 135i (starting at $35,675).  Powered by a 3.0-liter, 230 horsepower inline 6-cyinder engine that generates 200 lb-ft of torque, the 128i Coupe will feature Valvetronic valvetrain management and aluminum/magnesium construction—core elements of BMW’s EfficientDynamics. The powerful 135i Coupe features BMW’s twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine that produces 300 horsepower and an incredible 300 lb-ft of torque from as low as 1,400 rpm. With its direct piezo gasoline injectors, twin low-mass turbochargers and air-to-air intercooling, optimum performance and economy is achieved with no loss in engine response. For the 135i Coupe, acceleration from 0-60 mph is accomplished in 5.1 seconds and top speed is electronically limited to 130 mph (149 mph with sport package). Both engines feature on-demand engine coolant pumps that improve fuel economy and reduce parasitic losses for increased output.

Handsome looks with sporting intentions

The new 1 Series Coupe combines unique, dynamic and unmistakable design elements with a powerful and muscular body. The greenhouse with its characteristic “Hofmeister kink” is moved rearward and offers a particularly nimble look with its long hood. The short overhangs, long wheelbase and large frameless doors sit on a body with a striking shoulder line for a modern interpretation of BMW’s characteristic look. On the 135i Coupe, an M Aerodynamic Kit is standard.

The 1 Series boasts aggressive rear end styling. The trunklid has an integrated spoiler chiselled into the rear end of the car to accentuate the short rear section. On the 135i, an additional lip spoiler provides greater downforce on the rear end at high speeds.

The individual sections within the L-shaped rear taillights give the vehicle a lower, sportier look. Horizontal lights integrated in the rear light clusters offer a homogeneous lighting effect with the help of light-emitting diodes (LEDs).  This light design, as found on other BMW models, makes the BMW 1 Series Coupe stand out at night. Also, the Adaptive Brakelights operating in two stages in relation to brake application force are yet another feature typical of BMW, with the additional benefit of extra safety on the road.

The standard Adaptive Xenon headlights (optional on the 128i) complete with integrated Cornering Lights make driving in the dark safer than ever. The daytime headlight function in typical BMW style with two corona rings on each headlight unit enhances the perception of the car under normal and “murky” light conditions.

Luxurious interior appointments with today’s technology

The innovative interior design incorporates high-quality and sophisticated trim elements with luxurious upholstery and color choices. A 60/40 split rear seat is standard. The control console for the entertainment and air conditioning functions is integrated smoothly and harmoniously into the dashboard through its soft radii and flowing surfaces. The controller featured in the iDrive system with the optional Navigation system is integrated in the center console, again following BMW’s characteristic philosophy. Galvanized pearl gloss surfaces adorn the interior door handles, the glove compartment handle, the radio’s rotary knobs, the knobs of the automatic air conditioning system, the iDrive Controller, and the ornamental trim strips featured on the sports steering wheel.

The BMW 1 Series Coupe is available with a choice of two upholstery options—sporty and comfortable Leatherette or rich Boston Leather. Boston Leather upholstery adds further style to the high-quality impression of the interior. And as a practical feature, map pockets are integrated in the lower part of the doors. The optional Sport Package includes sports bucket seats with enhanced side support and are finished in highly distinctive leatherette materials or Boston leather.

Actually I think it will push the 3 series more up market, as it will no longer be the entry level BMW, secondly BMW will have a car that will put the BMW brand in reach of a broader audience, particularly ones that previously could not afford a new BMW. I bet the tuners will have a blast with this car as well.

This means that the 1 series would do some damage to 3 series as well. its sad to say but its kinda true if you think about it. The 1 series is closely priced with the 3 series. The 1 series is faster I know but the 3 is bigger. Car of the year? Maybe but the gtr might take it like ricealot said

people who need a sedan (majority of 3-series sales) will not consider the 1-series coupe.

and the 3-series couple is $10k more when equipped the same.

i believe the 1-series won't cannibalize 3-series sale much at all. especially since the 1-series is low volume in comparison.

Does anybody know if you actually have to insert the key in the dash for BMW's with the "Comfort Access" option? I really like the Toyota system that allows you to keep the key in your pocket.

I know most of you don't know what an LSD is, but I really can't believe BMW and Porsche are offering "performance" cars with 300+ hp without LSD's. At $36k+, and 300hp, this should have an LSD, not a contrived "Electronic LSD"

Lotus is finally getting with the program on some versions of their Elise and Exiges.

Doesn't the 335 beat a G37 (a car with LSD) around a racetrack?

You'd have to be driving the hell out of a vehicle to see the benefits of LSD.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to have an LSD equipped car. It's just that all an LSD really is good for is shaving 10ths of a second off of a lap time, or hard driving in bad weather.

The 135 will be a fun car with or without LSD. With LSD it would be even more fun. They should have at least made it an option.

Its not about lap times. When a wheel starts to lose grip, the "electronic LSD", better known as traction control, begins to apply brakes to the offending wheel. A true LSD mechanically applies more power to the wheel with traction. It is a disheartening experience to drive a car without an LSD with or without the traction control turned on or off. It TC is disabled you are back to doing 1 wheel burnouts like some clown in high school. With the TC engaged, any small loss of traction results in braking on the rear wheels.

AE86,

I agree with almost everything that you said except when you said that its disheartening driving a non LSD equipped car with or without the traction control turned on. You would get a disheartening feeling only if you are driving at the limits of adhesion (driving like a hooligan). During Normal driving you will never notice the difference.

Oh yeah, TheBoss,
I was at 0 when I complained. Which is probably still a bit premature :-)

LexSucks,
Ever accelerated moderately hard through a SLOW corner, lets say a traffic intersection? In my 1995 E36 M3 with Michelin Pilot SP2s it is very easy to get slightly out of shape when you are hard on the throttle. I hear what you are saying about hooligans, but I am talking about SLOW corners and hard acceleration. Since a typical day includes about 10+ of these corners AND I am unfortunate to live in LA, this is about the only excitement I get driving too and from work and I don't want an "electronic LSD" tapping the brakes when things start to get interesting.

it's smaller than the 3-Series length-wise by almost 9 inches. It is, however, larger inside than a G37. The trunk is also larger than the G37. And it's priced similarly to the G37. But much faster than the G37.

Not a single close-up picture of the wheels?

The brake calipers appears to be painted and have letters "BMW" on it! This is the first application of Painted Finished Calipers on a BMW (M6s doesn't even have them). BMW Brake Calipers usually look unfinished and crude (like the calipers on the M6). A close up pic would have been nice :-)

The 1 series has very attractive specs (esp the twin turbo engine from the 3 series), but styling wise it is not as attractive as the 3 series which has the perfect proportions. In my view the pricing is too close to the 3 series.

This car is priced at the upper end of the small car market. Don't think Nissan "Infinti" G37. Think VW. BMW AG saw a hole in their line-up more than 8 years ago. Knowing that that the E92 3 Series was going to have more features (read weight). And they went back to their roots.

They have actually been around long enough to have roots! This car will cross demographic groups. Young, old, men & women will buy this car. Because they like the car. It looks really great in white. The aftermarket likes BMW's because people like to tinker with cars. So this car will be huge across the board. Way to keep leading BMW. Well done!!

If a run-of-the-mill twin turbo engine can win "engine of the year", I see no reason why putting the run-of-the-mill engine in a small package wouldn't warrant a "Car of the Year" award.

There were far better introductions for the 2009 production year than this girly car from BMW. Only girls will buy this puny puppy. Look this is not a man's car. Like they say in Topgear, only those dudes who use moisturizers, put gel on their hair, and use tinted sunglasses are going to get a car that they like because it is small, and cute, and convenient. Come on guys, be a real man, don't you guys want something badass, something that can smoke the 1 series like porkchops in it's dust. I want the badass GTR V spec, only wish that i had the money to get one.

BTW Topgear.. Jeremy Clarkson called the 135i the "BEST CAR BMW MAKES"...

The Performance the 135i offers for the $$... cannot be beat, especially when you add BMW quailty build, and NO cost maintainance for 4y/50K miles..

Fantastic job BMW! and just the beginning of the "TURBO" era at BMW...

I am tired of people claiming consumers choose BMW because of the badge, who cares. That doesn't stop BMW from making great performing cars, they haven't slacked a minute in the engineering and performance sector in the past 4 decades, year after year their cars win accolades on various categories, it's ridiculous to say BMWs are bought only for snob appeal, they make great cars that snobs just happen to buy, BMWs have snob appeal, other cars have "cool" or "my car is in front of a magazine this month" appeal. Snobs are customers and BMW is a business in the business of selling to customers and not fans, so please keep the "snob appeal" crap to an absolute non existence and not minimum. BMW make great cars, not the best in the world, but pretty darn close, end of story.

I drive a 3 wagon. The back seat space is for dwarfs or amputees. Its essentially a 5 door coupe. I looked at the 1 the other day and have to say I rather liked it. I am neither fat nor suffering from penis envy, so the big motor little car not racy looking idea is my cup of tea. Pearl white with cream leather and slivers of aluminum. But then the 123d is apparently just as much fun...

so whatever you guys say, and i do agree that the 1 series with it's turbo engines and smaller dimensions make this car a probably very sporty car, but that does not mean that you can crown such a car the best car of the year. Because the best car of the year should be something revolutionary, something that will pave the way for future cars, for example a model that showcases high end technologies that may pave the route for other companies to adapt those technologies in their line up and thus making such technos available for customers and the new competition would bring the price of those technologies down and make them affordable. And i have seen many ppl writting that the 1 series is affordable, well the base MSRP is affordable, but certainly you wont find any without factoray installed options in the lot, and those are bound to pick the price beyond 32 or 33 grand, very close to 3 series and G Infinitis, and the turbo charged versions would cost even more, although the price will be much less than the 335i, it is hard to believe that 135i will be better than G37 or the upcoming IS coupe. And for being the most revolutionary car for the world today, i would rather choose the GTR as the car of the year, because it showcases very high end technologies, such as: I don't need to mention, go check out any GTR spec, and shows other companies that such technologies can be delivered at a low cost. Do you guys know how the japanese car companies came to dominate the car business out of no where around 1990s? Well by doing exactly that: giving a big bang for the buck specifically in making automotive technologies cheaper.
