GM wants Chevy dealers to defend truck sales against Ford and Dodge
Encouraging dealers to focus more on the brand’s truck sales, GM told Chevrolet dealers that they have the product and brand positioning to remain the top-selling brand in the U.S. over No. 2 Toyota and No. 3 Ford.

While foucsing on the new Malibu sedan, GM told dealers that they must defend the brand’s truck sales against new Ford F-150 and the new Dodge Ram. GM plans on keeping the Silverado fresh along with special versions on the way including the All-American edition and the new Two-Mode hybrid model...

The only way I would bless this great company is if it would figure out a way to sell vehicles directly to consumers over the Internet with no hanky-panky pricing gimmicks and full disclosure about everything.

Well they can start by putting the 6 speed transmission they have in the the Escalade/Yukon/Tahoe instead of the cheap 4 speed they got in there now. That would be a huge start for their defense.

Escalade already comes with the 6-speed, the others are waiting for production capacity to be increased.

It can't be good when you have to encourage. Shouldn't the procuct speak for itself?

gm will never sell more trucks than ford!
It looks like gm only wants to sell quantity and not quality. Greedy bastards.

You are full of it. Japan is not the enemy, why because your precious cheap American cars sales are falling because they take the pride and actually care to build us better cars than GM rather than try to fool us with a bunch of gimmicks and tricks. Personally I take it as an insult for them even thinking were all that dumb. Secondly I will not support a company from my country (America) that gives everyone else in the world their best products but gives us Americans their worst cvheapest efforts in automotive Design. Example Austrailia gets the v8 RWD 6spd falcopn and the Holden monaro (pontiac GTO) Etc amd we get a POS v6 fwd impala with an ancient outdated chassis and outdated engines with plastic intakes that always crack, failure prone instrument clusters, Alternators, Starters and fuel pumps, and coolant temperature sensors with a healthy dose of super torque steer, so who's so great now. I am not a jap car fan but at least they care enough to take their time to make a quality vehicle with out using hollow cheap plastic interior that would even offend Tuperware. So thats why I don't buy American. I give GM cresit at least they stepped up their game with the malibu and CTS but how long did that take. I can see the meeting now. Attention our American buyers are now aware of a thing called quality. They are catching on to our gimmicks. we better finally step up quality in a couple vehicles so they will not all go to the Japs. Piss on GM Ford and Chrysler.

man, when will people learn buying U.S. brand cars don't always equal to buying U.S. made cars?

which country receive the most profit depends on where the car is made.
for example, with each Ford sold, they make profit of 50 bucks (which is true). assuming you payed 20k for a Ford, the company only profits 50 dollar. the rest 19950 goes to 1.Manufacture (those worker are payed 40-80 dollar per hr, managers get much more, health insurance, retirement...) 2. parts (mainly transmission, electronics, lights, raw material) 3. Tax (varies by manufacturing country, in U.S. it is about 20%? ) 4. dealership, 5. marketing....

so, if you really want to have most of the money stay in U.S, buy U.S. made cars. my friend's 05 hrysler Sebring has 70% of parts made in Japan (engine and trans). so out of 20k she payed for the car, at least half of it goes to japan. if you spend 20k buying a Honda Accord, then nearly all the money stays in U.S. and help U.S. workers. only around few hundred or less goes to Japan.

Thank you Ghost hunter you are absolutley correct. Like the Nissan titan for example. Designed and built by Americans and built and sold only here. So the question is do I buy this AMerican nissan or a Mexican Dodge? And whats great about the titan is that is the best bang for your buck fullsize pickup. Mainly because there is no entry level wimpy v6, only the 317hp 5.6 v8, so even if you get the most stripped down lowest model you still get the 5.6 v8, so you don't have to settle for a 190HP V6 like you do with GM, For or Dodge. At least the tundra has a powerful v6 with well over 200hp.

Question regarding facts: "to remain the top-selling brand in the U.S. over No. 2 Toyota and No. 3 Ford." Wasn't Toyota named the largest? or was that global sales and these are US numbers?

global.

what advantage in u.s. sales gm has (a sizable no.), is simply swamped by toyota's overseas advantage.

it's also very CURIOUS to me, that gm is "defending" against ford and dodge, but ignoring toyota, which is much more closely nipping at their heels.

maybe they've just accepted their products just CANNOT compete against toyota's? so they now just concentrate on retaining domestic loyalists?

This is just my opinion but I think some of you are missing the point and this is what I think GM is trying to say. When they say Defending I think they mean trying to make sure Dodge, Toyota and especially Ford do not put out misleading ads and newsletters saying how good there trucks are and how well they are selling. GM needs to stay on top of these tactics because until recently they have left that stuff go with no response. They have got to retaliate with true facts that will help them and keep there product constantly updated. You can disagree with me all you want but until you have looked into all of these trucks from the ½ tons through the 1 ton diesels then do not have the facts and right now the facts are that GM is putting out the nicest strongest trucks in history and the rest are playing catch-up. Toyota is there closest competition and yes Fords trucks are big and beefing looking but the new diesels have a ton of recalls and all the gas trucks are not even trying to get better mileage and they do not look like anything new.
