I'm wondering at what point these automakers will realize just how convoluted their line-ups are becoming?

This is a good vehicle for Europe.

It might be a good vehicle for my wife who wants a small SUV. She rejected the X3 only because the styling fools at BMW gave the X3 a faux running board in the form of a plastic rocker panel cover that juts out 3 or 4 inches from the body. Women hate that as they get their pants dirty on it when getting in and out of the vehicle in the winter.

They have enough customers willing to pay a big premium for the BMW brand. This allows BMW to get away with smaller production quantities.

Actually that would give BMW four (X1, X3, X5, X6). I also would expect one day for them to make an actual 7 passenger SUV based on the 7-Series platform since the X5 really isn't one.

As for their size justifying the number of vehicles, Lexus is much smaller worldwide than BMW and they have three SUV's (and supposedly a fourth a coming). Mercedes is smaller than BMW worldwide and they have three SUV's, with a definite fourth coming soon. It's not like BMW is alone here.

Sure, but the BMW SUVs DON'T MAKE SENSE. There are only two that make sense--the X3 and X5. The X1 and X6 are completely unnecessary. In Mercedes's case, only the G-Wagen doesn't make sense, and for Lexus, the GX doesn't make sense.

BMW is rolling this out to further amortize the investment in the Mini SUV and maximize their profits.

Think Chevy Trailblazer / Saab 9-7X / GMC Envoy.

This is BMW's 'hedge' in case the Mini SUV flops, as it doesn't cost that much more to add an incremental model, and/or increases profit if the segment proves really deep. BMW - the Ultimate Accounting Machine.

I guess this is not for the US market. Struggling to see the use of a SUV, er SAV, with the cargo capacity of a Kleenex box.

The X6 has more cargo space than a Porsche Cayenne and the X5 I'm testin has PLENTY of room

Huu, you're full of crap, there's no way your head hit the roof of an X6 if you're 5'8". I'm 5'11" and head clearance in the back.

I'm guessing the difference between you and me isn't that I'm 3" taller, it's that I've actually seen and been inside the X6 and you haven't.

Huu, next time you try sitting in the back of the X6 try not wearing the double dose of Depends your crying a** is always in. See how that works for you buddy.

Did you ever think of the fact that the X6 you were sitting in had a panoramic sunroof, and the one JRob was sitting in did not?

Anyway, I have a feeling that you strained your neck to make your head hit the glass. That's the kind of thing you would do in order to bash this car.

Your dinosaur Jeep was built for car camping. The only off-roading the X6 will ever see is if Muffy back over the landscaping. If the X6 can carry golf clubs its succeeded.

The old X5 had a smaller boot than the X3.

Huu - that's the old X% from 1999, without Xdrive, which improved things significantly.
I've read tests where the X5 was the only one to get up a slope, but of course, I can't cite them, as I can't remember.

And Huu, your comments stand true for ALL car based SUVs - what advantages do they have? Very few is the answer.
