Subaru working on a diesel Impreza STi?

Do you really care about fuel-economy when you’re looking to purchase a car like the Subaru Impreza STi or the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution? Well Subaru thinks you do. The guys over at AutoExpress have learned that Subaru is working on diesel version of its rally-going all-wheel-drive hatchback.

Subaru will first offer its new 2.0 liter 4-cylinder boxer unit producing 148 horsepower in the Impreza range this September. The company may use a tuned version of the engine producing 180 horsepower in a racy STi version.

a lot of people seem to forget the STi and EVO are RALLY Cars, which means they need torque. Which means they are better off with Diesel engines if properly tuned. its a good idea IMHO.

what kind of blunt statement is that? you do know that it has some of the best AWD systems right next to audi and are very useful to those in the NW and NE? and they've also built the 1st boxer diesel engine. and they've been very sucessful in the WRC, especially when colin mcrae was alive.

the best AWD systems I think have mitsubishi in its lancer evo becouse it can vector torque not only from axle to axle (active center differential) but also between rear wheels (quattro and subaru system can`t).Of course honda sh-awd system also can and now bmw (in X6) and audi also will have this but mitsubishi have had this for many years

Now Subaru seems to be going in the right direction with its engine technology, hope Toyota takes a leaf out of its sister concern. Toyota engineers are a bunch of twats, havent done anything on the diesel front except for the 2.2ltr engine. Kudos Subaru!

personally I think anyone with a brand name in their user Id is probably a bit of a fanboi douche. Nice, but would actually prefer the diesel STI engine to be put into a Legacy. Performance, decent looks, and economy; what's not to like.
