Honda’s CEO disagrees with Nissan's Ghosn, says no recession in U.S.
Honda’s CEO, Takeo Fukui disagrees with the recent comments made by Nissan’s CEO Carlos Ghosn about the auto industry being in a recession.

“It is true that in states like Florida and California, the numbers are going down,” Fukui said. “But if you look at the U.S. as a whole, I don’t think we’re seeing a recession. There are still good business opportunities. There is firm demand for automobiles.”

Fukui said that Honda’s slow sales in...

I think Honda's CEO is a bit lost on what's going on. He's looking at things from one point of view, HIS. Of course when his Honda's cars are selling well, he doesn't think there's a recession. However, everyone in the US knows all too well that the US is slipping into a recession. The real estate market is falling apart and the federal reserve expects to lower interest rates AGAIN in an attempt to solve this dilemma. Over just eight days in January this year, the Fed shaved 1.25 percentage points, the biggest one-month reduction in a quarter-century.
One thing he should be paying closer attention to is his Acura brand. Despite what he may think, even though Acura sedans seem to sell fine, it's not selling to the right people in terms of luxury. Acura is a pseudoluxury brand selling to pseudoluxury customers(people who cannot or don't wish to pay premium prices for a BMW, Lexus, etc...) The word rear wheel drive isn't even in Acura's vocabulary, even though they easily have the technology.
Someone posted an article saying Acura is going Tier 1 and later another article said a 400 horsepower V8 with rear wheel drive from Acura was coming although that info never officially came from Acura itself, but from some unconfirmed source at Best Car magazine.

Honda's CEO is another recession denier trying to talk up the economy.

If anything we will have a mild recession ;-)

The housing market is already springin' back!

You are lucky to live in a temporary contrarian market. Get out while you can and buy back later when all those additional foreclosed homes are dumped on the market at the same time.

I live 4 miles from the future Great Park in Irvine, Ca and we have many new housing communties that were started in the past 2 years called, Woodbury, Woodbury East, Orchard Hills, Portola Springs and Stonegate, and I have been watching what the builders are doing and about a year ago they stopped building homes, but now I am seeing the construction workers coming back and that in my opinion is an indicator the housing market has hit bottom and it's rebounding.

BTW, I'm talking about ten thousand new homes ranging in the the $400,000 to the $2,000,000 price range.

The other day I was at a red light in Lake Forest, Ca across the street from the cemetery where Nicole Brown-Simpson is buried and I was waiting for a green light with a brand new without license plates a Mercedes GL550, Audi Q7 and a Cadillac Escalade. All new and it just goes to show even though a gallon of regular unleaded is $3.20 a gallon here, people are buying cars that don't get great gas milage.

A mild recession is all we will get, at least here in OC.

Smart money is usually isolated from the negative effects of a recession. They may even benefit from it by taking advantage of distressed pricing. I have not checked recently but I doubt that Palm Beach real estate values are tumbling for example. You have testified that upscale real estate is holding its value in your area.

Nissan makes better engines and I am disappointed that the new Accord does not offer a DOHC V6. SOHC is not good enough for me.

"Die Nissan, die!"

Not even 20+ years of bad management could kill Nissan. And even after that, Carlos Ghosn turned it from a non-profitable company to record breaking profits in less than 2 years. You better get used to the fact that Nissan will be around for a while!!

"Nissan makes better engines"

You're right EnnNorak. Nissan's VQ35 has been named one of Ward's 10 Best Engines in the World 13 years in a row. No Honda engines were even mentioned this year...

Moron alert. Tell ya what, if you are soooo ashamed to live in this country, I'll buy you a one way ticket to anywhere else in the world you wanna live, but you must promise to never come back. You'll thank me if your boy Barack wins the White House, because things will be even worse. And let me guess, you're a criminal justice major, not an econ one.

Also, if you read the full AP story, Fukui is clearly indicating he doesn't believe in a US recession for Honda's business. That's a far cry from saying the US will not go into recession...which by the way, we are not in right now, but probably wouldn't take that bet myself.

Coprius offers a frightening glimpse into the mindset of the typical Obama voter. His baseless claims, ignorance and hatred of his own country aside, the power he and his socialist brethren are willing to cede to the gov't, in this case in the realm of automotive legislation, is insane. "The best way to improve the car industry is for the government to pass a law that mandates that everyone must drive a hybrid". What!?!?!?. I guess any semblance of individual freedom is completely out the window with these Obama socialists. That aside, I believe Honda's Fukui is wrong. The drop in home values limits potential new car buyer's ability to tap into home equity to purchase a new car. This factor as well a slight rise in unemployment, the further weakened dollar and tightening credit will probably make for slower auto sales.

None of the Obama supporters on this website are anything like the ones I campaign with or have come to know over these past months. The ones on this site (such is the way with almost everyone on this site it seems) are morons. But at least he's a moron who will be voting for a candidate I can stand behind. The Obama haters seem just as moronic when they open their mouthes, spewing just as much nonsense and rhetoric to suite their cause.

In general, I believe politics needs to stay off this site for a few sentences of slander either way is no basis for social or political advancement.
