GM and Fiat looking to buy BMW engines

BMW arguably builds some of the finest engines in the industry but the carmaker isn’t one to prevent other makes from using its powerplants. Only last week Citroen announced plans to use BMW engines in some of its cars and soon GM and Fiat could be doing the same.

Both GM and Fiat are currently in negotiations with BMW over a deal to procure engines and transmissions, according to the Financial Times Deutschland, citing sources at all three carmakers.

GM vehicles powered by BMW engines. I like the sound of it. That's great news.

BMW has used GM transmissions in many models in the past, the old 4 speed for inline 6's and the five speed used with the V8's were GM units.

No the 4 speeds were ZF 4hp22 and later the ZF 4hp22eh when the manual mode was available in mid to late 80's. the 5 speed auto was indeed a gm design.

GM and BMW have been close partners in developing technology for a long time. They both have implemented eachothers tech into their line ups. Anyone says differently is being naive or ignorant.

Latest collaboration is the Hybrid Two-Mode system. BMW engineers great motors and I have a friend that owns a European Repair shops and prefers BMW to MB and Audi is a close 2nd. This can only be good for all parties. Wonder which motors are under discussion and for which vehicles. Perhaps only for GM's Euro cars only?

GM is stepping up their quality big time. For the first time I can actually recommend an American car to someone. I think BMW and GM could do alot, especially if they help inspire and design engines for GM. I can't believe I am saying this!!!
