Volkswagen says profit climbed 50 percent in 2007

Volkswagen announced today that its profit climbed about 50 percent last year selling a record 6.2 million cars worldwide. German’s largest automaker said it expects 2008 sales to be even better. Volkswagen said it sold 6.2 million Volkswagen brand cars and Audi, Skoda, Seat, Lamborghini and Bentley in 2007, an 8 percent increase over 2006.

Sales were up 4 percent to $165.2 billion making the company $6.2 billion in 2007. Official fourth-quarter figures are scheduled to be released on March 13th.

I'm not surprised VW is profitable -- It's at the expense of their customers. I just saw the new Tiguan at a car show. It's the exact size that my wife was looking for but when I lifted up the heavy steel hood, I was surprised to learn that it is not supported by struts. One has to hold up the heavy hood while dislodging the long hood support rod from it's clip so it could be inserted into the right hole in the hood to create a support to hold the hood open -- how inconvenient! How much extra can it cost to have an easy-opening hood supported in the open position by proper struts?

On the positive side, I did not bang my head on the roof getting in and out of the front passenger seat but I don't think the seats are comfortable enough for long trips. The vehicle I saw had cloth upholstery -- I can only hope that more cushy leather seats are available.

What is the net-profit? I don't car for just profit. Net-profit is the more true figure.

Jetta TDI will start at around 25,000 Canadian. The Prius starts at 29,500 Canadian dollars. So go ahead and relax a little.
