Mazda considering Mazda2 and diesel engines for the U.S.

We’ve always been disappointed with reports of Mazda not bringing the Mazda2 to the stateside. But now, a few words by Mazda’s North American president, Jim O’Sullivan, Mazda may be considering the Mazda2 for the North American market along with plans of selling diesel engines in the U.S. market for the first time.

“We’re not ready to make the announcement but obviously we sell diesels in Europe,” O’Sullivan said during a lunch with reporters in Detroit. “The Mazda 2 is extremely successful in Europe and Asia. We’re continuing to watch that space in North America.”

Just plain stupid. The Mazda2 would wipe the floor with the Yaris, xA, Suzuki SX4, Versa, etc. based on looks alone.

Compared to all the models M35 mentioned along with the Honda Fit. Mazda would be smart to bring this over. It would sweep the other competition, if only based on looks. That is a great looking car for it's size. Doesn't seem dopey and bug eyed, but looks like a mini Mazda 3 hatch. Coupled with an efficient diesel the others will be back at the drawing board in no time.

I'll say it now, if Mazda debut'ed the 2 here before the Fiesta came out, it would own the market in this segment. I personally see Mazda and Nissan being the better two of the Japanese cars currently. Nothing new or exciting is coming from Honda or Toyota.

Toyota seriously needs to get a TRD division setup and offer a TRD version of most if not all their cars, with superchargers or some boost in power, exhausts, suspensions, appearance, etc. They used to sell S/C for my Matrix under warranty!

And Honda has had nothing attractive come from the stable for a few years now. The new Accord is a flop, the supposed redesigned Pilot was a fail, and the Ridgline follows that look so it's a fail so far too. Then the S2000 is no longer made, fail again. They both need help.

But this would be a car I would seriously consider if I had to get something more economical, it's stylish, and knowing Mazda will have decent power, if not class leading and better efficiency. And the options and features will be a mile long. Thumbs up, send it over!
