Audi May Build Own U.S. Plant

Volkswagen's premium brand Audi is considering scenarios for production in the United States including building its own plant, its chief executive said on Tuesday.

"We are considering the most varied options. That can mean joint production with Volkswagen but also a completely independent Audi plant would be a possibility," Rupert Stadler told reporters at the Geneva car show.

He said the earliest Audi could begin U.S. production would be 2010.

Stadler said involving major Volkswagen investor Porsche in U.S. production was also an option.

Please build this Audi.

It will lower costs by reducing shipping and increasing the amount of vehicles in the US domestic market (supply vs demand would work for the consumer for once)

However the on the downside, Audi will have to deal with the UAW. Which will probably end up offset the shipping cost deacrease on Audi's by forcing them to pay Union fees. So in essesence the cost of an Audi would remain the same :(

I’m afraid you are correct… and knowing how well we are dealing with metric system…soon the factory would be either closed or it will retool in assembling VW “Transporter” and “Crafter” competing with Mercedes offspring’s of “Sprinter” in US.

I don’t buy it. I don’t think Germans are se desperate, and why would they build it here when they have one in Mexico already? I’m sorry it was VW not AUDI plant…. :):):)

Audi is doing this to enhance THEIR profit margin; not lower the cost of the car to the consumer. They are arguably losing money on almost every car sold in the US. All economic factors point to the dollar sinking even more; so this is not a question of IF it's a question of WHEN.

Soon I suppose, it will cost then way less with the cheap dollar. Yet I still think that unions and "my way or the highway" attitude will ruin in it all. Unless is just an assembly line and everything is shipped form Europe semi mounted. Bulky part could be build here yet after the last battle between Plastech and Chrysler... I'm rather skeptic about that.

They hedge their currency risk. Currency fluctuations play some role in profits but not as much as you'd expect...
