VW to Name Production Up! "Lupo"

Anyone else think this is a bad idea?!

Sounds like sonething you'd name a mutt.

Also note that the next gen Lupo will be sold in the US to compete against the Versa, Yaris, and others. But who cares, cause when the Mazda 2 arrives end of next year as an 2010 model it will dominate the market.

The Lupo is smaller than the Versa and Yaris.

Especially if it's a diesel Mazda 2 version.

I actually believe that the Ford Verve ­- I mean Ford Fiesta, will kick everyone else's butt in this segment.

The lupo has been out in europe for years and has always been called the Lupo! it doesn't doo to well there either. Its a smaller car than the yaris fiesta or polo probably around the same size as the toyota aygo!

Having this and the Mazda2 will be great...I'd rather buy a Lupo than an Up!

I do remember the old “Lupo” (wolf), yet I checked and it is gone, now they have only “Fox” and “Polo”. The “UP” is concept as far as of today. And as every concept it ought to be treated as such. Otherwise I’ll demand my GX3 from them I would be happy to have fast small summer car, if you wish, for under 20K. You can enjoy the lupo-polo-up-fox…, whatever they would name it.

I do actually think about the new Ipreza 2.5i, AWD for the masses. 18+K is a steal. Any comments?

This is ment to compete with the Smart for2.

The Fox replaced the Lupo after they stopped making the Lupo.
However, the Fox is not as good as a car as the Lupo, and is cheap inside, as it's Brazilian-built (to a price).
This new Lupo will be a lot better and have the character of the old model, hopefully.

Whatever they call it...............

It is an interesting study that auto enthusiasts are genuinely agolly about micro cars coming to our market. And I might add, already engaging in bench racing of sorts :)

If I'm not mistaken, the Lupo's last model had a TDI version (diesel) with 1.2-liter, 3 cylinder pumpe duse that could get nearly 90 mpg converted to U.S. numbers.

I haven't seen a U.S. car anywhere near those fuel economy numbers. Also, any diesel can run on 100% three different renewable fuels all made from vegetable oil / animal fat without loss in fuel economy or engine modification.

I'll be urging VW to bring a Lupo, UP, or even if they want to call it "CRAP", to the U.S. with a 3 cylinder, diesel engine.

It would be nice yet… imagine that small car against a Ford F150… or any mid and upper size SUV here in US, I don’t wish to be in the car. Plus I’m very curios to see some crash tests.

BTW, Toyota Yaris in GB, as we have it here to compare in real world, cheapest way to go… but let sum it up.

My dream is to walk in a dealership and buy a car the German way, pick an engine, pick transition... for an ordinary cheap small Opel/Saturn Astra, that is part of GM. I feel screwed.

You can't compare prices just based on the exchange rate!
They're totally different - cars cost a lot more here in Britain for many reasons, and direct comparisons show this.
A 135i is what, 30-35 thousand dollars? Here it's over 50. Bentley Continental GTs start at over 200000 dollars...the exchange rate has less than you think to do with US car prices.

I agree it makes no sense...

Yet, here in USA I suspect someone will pay 24K for a tin can with a diesel engine that is doing 70mpg. Sorry no offense. Actually, I’m certain… no one will.

Actually if the price of fuel gets high enough many people will be buying a "tin can with a diesel engine", not necessarily becasue they want to but out of necessity. The price pf a barrel of oil is pretty standard the world over but many countris charge a lot more tax per gallon (or liter, if you will) than is done in the US thereby raising the overall price. I suppose the fuel prioces are kept low because of concerns that we'll ruin our economy and major method of transport if prices were raised but I personally don't think this is necessarily a bad thing. It might force us to stop wasting so much gas on unecessarily large and fuel inefficient vehicles, force us to develop and rely more on public transportation, and help us to preserve our environment. The VW Lupo is nothing new, btw. These cars are quite common over here in Europe and ar quie popular in Germany at least.

PS. Pressure your government to lower the added taxation, your petrol is already expensive enough...
