Porsche Says No V12 Diesel Cayenne Planned

Porsche didn't unveil any major new models at the Geneva Car Show, which opened to the public today, but news has emerged that shows just how strong the winds of change are blowing through the European automotive industry.

Porsche has at last succumbed to the diesel.

The news isn't official yet; it was reported in the latest edition of pan-European fortnightly newsletter Automotive Industry Data (AID), known for its impeccable sources at Porsche.

AID said, quoting Porsche sources, that the diesel powered Cayenne SUV will makes its debut by the middle of 2009.

This will bring it ahead of the planned petrol-electric hybrid powered Cayenne, scheduled for 2010. Currently, Porsche only uses gasoline engines.

This is absolutely amazing that Porsche has gone from being so anti-diesel to so pro-diesel, in so little time.

Just six months ago, Porsche was actually spending marketing money towards discouraging the prospect of clean-diesel cars for America, as was GM, who now says they will have a Caddy CTS and Saturn Aura diesel in the U.S. in 2010.

Everywhere that I found an article about diesel cars, either GM or Porsche spokespersons were there saying it wasn't for them, and it shouldn't be for us.

Now, six months later, and a VW buyout later for Porsche and a VMM buyout buy GM, and Porsche and GM are ready to put advanced diesel power trains in their vehicles. With regards to Porsche, it will be a VW-designed vehicle (Touareg / Cayenne) with a VW/Audi designed engine (either a 3.0 V-6 or a 6.0 V-12).

I tend to think the Cayenne will get the 6.0. I've not read that the 3.0 V-6 is coming to the Cayenne, only that Porsche is considering putting a diesel in that vehicle. Of course, the 3.0 V-6 will be emission certified this fall for the Touareg and Q7 and the 6.0 probably won't be certified for another eight to ten months after that, so maybe Porsche will opt for the 3.0 initially.

Now that even GM, Porsche, and Toyota have joined the diesel bandwagon (the previous diesel haters), it seems as though the anti-diesel folks on this forum would be converted as well.
