Audi’s prepared for higher MPG needs

Audi might fast become the luxury brand fuel economy leader. Michael Dick, Audi AG’s member of the board of management for technical development, points to a history of technology leadership including direct-injection turbodiesels back in 1989 and the A2 1.2TDI being the first 5-door to reach 3-liters of fuel per 100kms or 78MPG in 1999.

“I think we are positioned very well” for any increased focus on fuel-efficiency in the U.S., Dick told AutoObserver. “Our history is to make highly efficient cars.”

Great. Can't wait till the Audi A7, thats my next car in 2012, because it'll be time for car shopping again. And so far the only 2 cars on my list is the 2012 Lexus GS and 2012 Audi A7

Maybe that is why Audi sales are on the increase here, while Lexus sales are decreasing more each month.

Lexus might want to review the Audi play book and "copy and paste" (I hear they do that well) After all I hear imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

Not econoboxes but a different path than other German car makers. Yes they do have a history of front wheel drive however I do believe they are going towards all wheel drive for most of their models in a couple of years. Reducing overall weight does not make a car cheaply built or perceived, nor does reducing overall drag on a car as well. I don't think they will make their cars smaller just more fuel efficient which I think last time I checked everyone is doing that now.

Considering Audi utilizes turbo technology in almost all over their models, even with the new 3.0 turbo diesel, I can see this being a reality of them being the more mpg luxo company.

Audi reports that the new A4 is 10% lighter than the '07 model. How the hell did they accomplish this? The '08 model is larger and roomier than the last generation. Audi/VW is the most technologically advanced of the major auto manufacturers.

That's fine if the A1 and A2 never come to the States, but with a 1.2L TDI that got 78 MPG IN 1999!, why the hell hasn't this engine been available before in the Golf/Rabbit or Jetta?

Well a 1.2 tdi Golf/Rabbit would do 0-60 in about 16 seconds, and it wasn't so much the engine that made the A2 so economical, it was the aluminium and special components.
