I would much rather buy a Supra over a GT-R if the Supra had specs and numbers like the Nissan. Toyota has more than enough money to develop a Japanese supercar again that can take on the GT-R. Likewise with Honda. Their supposed NSX would bring back the big three from Japan to take on the Europeans. Now having said that, I would still choose a Euro for it's build quality and heritage but it would give the auto industry some healthy competition and more options for the younger playstation generations to choose from when buying a car.

The competition has to realize that the revival of the Supra is more than a wet dream. Sports car enthusiasts have been longing for a performance car that suffers from tune up anxiety. It seems that the world is longing for a car that can avoid service departments better than it can avoid radar.

i saw one of last gen celicas just a few days ago too. WAY TOO RARE, and looks even better than i remember. i actually turned a friend towards buying one. (his previous car was an acura integra, which he got after i pointed him towards it. prior to that he had a mundane cavalier ss or something.)

obviously, he had high respect for my taste in cars. not undeservedly (ahem!).

i DID elevate his appreciation for good designs and sophisticated engineering.

The last Supra is appreciating now. Look on Ebay, you'll be shelling out 60,000 but it'll have somewhere in the neighborhood of 1,000 horses.

They need to have some sort of sports car even if its just the Celica or MR2. Its kinda silly that the only "sporty" car in their stable is the Camry SE. Right now they've gone crossover crazy with no end in sight.

Question is with that horsepower would it compete against the fabled GT-R Skyline or keep itself toned down a bit with the new 370Z. Personally I would rather see the latter of the two as Toyota does not need a $60k sports coupe. If you want one of those, go buy the IS-F (granted it has 4 doors).

It would also really put the pressure on Mazda to clean up its RX-8 and make it more of a sports competitor.

I guess it can go both ways, but I would rather see a Supra come back to Toyota starting at say 28-29k and the top model at 34k, basically putting it in the realm of Subaru STI and Evo competition. Now that would really be fun.

Rumor has it that Toyota is also working on bringing back the Celica with AllTrac all wheel drive and a more powerful engine. Guess them joining up with Subaru is gonna help things out.

The old all-tracs were like mini-jeeps. Reliable and awesome in the snow/winter.

It drives me crazy when I see articles like this in magazines.....basically a "wouldn't it be cool if" with no basis in fact. I would also like to see Toyota put out a sports car but enough already with the made up news.

Yes and Acura should bring back the Legend and Vigor. I'm tired of numerical designations for models.

The front end is reminiscent of the last Supra, which is good. They need to also incorporate the the 3-in-a-row circular tailamps from the last Gen, making it instantly recognizable.

To be true to itself it would need to compete with the GT-R, otherwise, it'll just be another RX-8 (not a bad thing, just not what it use to be)

To be honest here, and I'll admit it I am not a Toyota fan, No. They do not need to bring back the Supra. From a business perspective they need to get back to what they do best, build reliable automobiles. They are experiencing major growing pains in quality, and even the most loyal of fans should be able to admit that. They need to get back to the basics of building super reliable, albeit boring, automobiles before their reputation starts to fall. They need to concentrate their effort on their core markets (Camry, Corolla, and Sienna. They build people movers.

The new Camry has an odd design, some angles it looks good but some are repulsive. The new Corolla looks less boring than the old one but still has some oddness about it. The Yaris is great for its segment where odd works but Toyota needs traditional, lowest common denominator styling in its mainstream models. The Sienna needs an update and IMO a hybrid system to pull some attention away from the competition.

And they need to get the next few launches perfect before they think about jumping back into the sport coupe category, which is becoming a little more than overloaded (Mustang, G35 coupe, RX8, Challenger, Camaro, Eclipse, upcoming RWD Hyundai coupe). To jump in and play on the low end would be a disgrace to the Supra name (it was and should be RWD based). To jump in w/ Mustang (who pretty much dominates the 2 door 4 seater market) while Challenger and Camaro come on line would be a BAD mistake. While the Supra is an awesome car it just doesn't compete w/ the history that these names have, again not trying to be biased here just stating what I see as fact. And as said above I don't think that going after the GT-R (not to mention the 911, R8, Z06/ZR1, Lambo cars) would be a wise move. You are definitely in Lexus' territory in price and truth be told the LF-A will fill that void quite nicely and add some panache to the brand which is known as nice but doesn't bring the instant respect that a Bentley Conti GT or an AM Vanquish would.

I'm kinda gettin a little tired of hearing about domestic purchases keep money here. Some people still don't realize that companies like Honda, Toyota, Subaru, Hyundai have HUGE plants and facilities in the US. Why? Cause we are one of, if not their largest market so it makes more financial sense than importing. It's why Audi is looking to put a plant here, and why BMW is expanding their's.

Most cars nowadays in the US market are either made in Canada or US. Some from Mexico too, like VWs. But for the most part you dollar spent on the Toyota Corolla is actually going into the US market believe it or not. They have created tens of thousands of jobs in state of the art facilities that quite frankly rival the American plants.

Not to put the US plants down, but they have been around for a very long time where they stand now, so when a company with loads of cash builds a new plant in a town somewhere in Alabama or Georgia they can build it up to modern specs. It's been tough for American companies to compete with keeping their plants open and running, but these foreign companies coming onto our soil are doing nothing but good for our economy. Take the Toyota Tundra, they built an entire plant in Texas (truck countre USA) just for this to be built. I'm sure the red blooded American working in that factory is not complaining, he's getting good pay, good benefits and a steady job.

I almost feel like the South is becoming the new Michigan cause a lot of offshore companies are using plants and facilities down there nowadays.


Back onto the topic of the Supra though. In order for it to compete with the Stang and others to come (Camaro), it would have to have the V6 option and offer either a V8 or a turbo or TT V6. I personally feel that since Toyota has joined up with Subie for their AWD technology that you will see more sporty AWDs available from Toyota coming soon.

As for the Sienna, it does need a freshen up and a hybrid option to beat out the Odyssey, but it already offers HIDs and AWD over the Odyssey which is nice to have in a kid hauler.

not only do toyota execs get only MODEST pay, the shareholders don't get much in dividends either. much of toyota's spectacular rise has been due to constant RE-INVESTING of profits.

and incidentally, profits are rarely more than 5 - 10% of the selling price.

all the REST of the money, ALSO gets recycled. to workers, suppliers, shipping companies, etc. etc.

every billion bucks that passes thru toyota's web of companies and suppliers feeds FAR MORE families then a like amount cycling thru detroit companies.

PLZ Toyota, I am absolutely begging to have the Supra back. The old one was a legend by it's own rights. I will much rather have the Supra as the ultra performance sports car than the unoriginal Lexus LFA. The name Supra reverbates a strong sense of awe and respect, something which LFA can never muster without proving itself. That is why Nissan was right to call GTR Nissan GTR, not some INFINITI something.

The last Supra is practically a modern classic. Buying one with low mileage is nearly as expensive as when brand new! I am still not too hot on its looks but cannot deny its performance and its 3.0L Turbo potential for huge power.

Toyota will have to closely match the GTR to be successful.

I'm usually a Honda fan, but that rendering looks pretty sweet. If they kept it in S2k, G, or Z territory, hell, I'd consider it. The mid-priced sport coupe segment seems to be lacking some options, so the more the merrier.

id love a new supra, but coming back with a v6 is a bit of a sketchy idea to me. im always fond of its old straight 6 with twin turbos. Yes toyota needs a real sport car in their line up, SE badges dont make things sporty or drive like a real performance car.

So please Toyota, if youre going to bring the supra back, make a REAL wise decision on the engine, and no f---ing auto transmissions.

No, it's a specialty car and it's price/design falls better in line with Lexus. Toyota needs to focus on quality and trim down the number of models it offers. They have too many vehicles. They need to get rid Scion. Back to basics.

Please bring it back! I beleive I represent a huge segment of the auto buyers popultion that want an upscale coupe - not a supercar - that will do 0-60 mph in a hair shy of 5 seconds without a second thought about top end over 100 mph. If Toyata could deliver that product it would consume a lot of high end sales going other manufactures on so called luxary sport vehicles and take a chunk out of the current STI and EVO fan club.

As much as I love German cars, I have always been enchanted by and had a spot in my heart for th Supra. So my answer is yes...Bring the Supra back. It's about damn time.

It does not matter what auto manufacturer you prefer, I think just about anyone who sees the value in competition and living in a world with options, would say "yes" to this one. Toyota has really deep pockets and as long as it is priced right and kicked a$$ as the GT-R will, it will sell!!
