New Study Says Traffic-Light Cameras Cause Accidents
Their legality is still questioned in some states. A case was argued before Iowa's Supreme Court only yesterday. But how about their efficacy?

Researchers at the University of South Florida Public Health have released a study that shows a significant spike in accidents at intersections that use cameras to catch light runners. Why? Drivers are more likely to slam on their brakes when the signal turns yellow, causing tailgaters to ram into them.

The spike is not insignificant. The USF study focused on Florida, and found that traffic fatalities caused by red-light running were not increasing. In fact, they account for less than 4% of the state's yearly traffic deaths.

Why don't morons learn not to tailgate the rearend of the car in front of them so when that car needs to stop they don't run out of distance and hit them!

In other words, get off my butt or is there something that attracts you to it?

My car got rear ended at a traffic light. I agree with the study that concludes that hidden cameras cause accidents. They cause drivers to rubber neck looking for the hidden camera. I heard of one rural municipality where people got so pissed at the camera that they shot it to pieces with an appropriate calibre bullet.

Vandalizing speed traps in the UK is apparently their favorite pass time. Mine is spilling nails in the hidden alcoves where cops wait clock you ;)

Hell yeah, this stupid red light cameras cost me about 160 bucks for two tickets. I wish i could mutilate all those stupid cameras. And you won't even know that a camera is there until the light flashes, although there is supposed to be signs, if you are not paying attention, it is hard to notice this cameras.

WHY did you pay your ticket? You have to be served in person! Until a clerk comes to your door and you've been served, DON'T PAY IT.

Does that work with parking tickets as well?

I agree. One of those red light camera tickets came in the mail 9 months ago and I never paid it. There is no record of it at the DMV.

What happens when you argue that someone else was driving?

Glad I don't live in the south. Up here in New England they do not exist. Down in VA where my fiance lived they had these stupid thing. They also had some queer sign that said "Don't block the box" I looked at it for a good 5 minutes since the lights there take FOREVER to change. I had to ask her what the hell it was. When she told me it was so people did not pull into an intersection so they could go when the light turned to yellow or red and they got an opening. I was like WTF! Stupidest thing ever, I can't tell you how many times I have sat in an intersection waiting for an opening. In the NE we don't have straight grid style roads with 60mph speed limits. We have backroads, curvies, twisties, hills, etc. So not a lot of lights offer the turn only option. Therefore sticking out is the only solution.

Which convinces me that people down there are just not as skilled drivers as a whole. Of course I also drive around NYC so you have to have a different mentality.

The way the roads are made up and the traffic cameras have nothing to do with driver skills at all and have every thing to do with ways the government to collect money easily. They are always looking for income and this is just one way. They have speed traps everywhere and on four lane highways speed limits of 55. I don't agree with it and as matter a fact I freak'n hate them but what do you do?

Well, YOU VOTE. You vote for better government. Your derelict Mayor and councilmen/councilwomen are responsible for these sorts of abuses. FIRE THEM.

Apparently Lubbock, Texas is removing these due to the fact that lights with cameras saw a 52% increase in the number of accidents.

We have red light cameras at most major intersections in Britain.
