Please make it prettier though. I have been a Porsche fanatic for over 40 years, but I was never really comfortable with the lines of the 928. And please don't make it look to much like the Panamera!

If by that you mean he is a money vacuum, you are very accurate. Every thing he touches turns to gold, and the Porsche sports car can only benefit from all that extra R&D cash.

All you haters have no clue...I sell Porsches for a living, and in times like we are now starting to experience, if it weren't for the volume that the cayenne adds to Porsche's sales, we'd be up sh%@! creek- with the exception of our lone SUV, none of these cars are justifiable necessities- they're basically toys. This new suv may be a filler car, but if it evens out the extreme swings in sports cars sales and helps generate revenue for the R&D of what they do best, so be it.

Porsche better be able to do something better than a rebadged VW. The Cayenne sells on name alone because there are many better SUV's. If I worked for a Porsche dealer I would rather see emphasis put on making the Boxster and Cayman more desirable. Forget the Panamera, it looks like a beached whale. Poersche needs to stick to basics.

Sure it would have been great if they didn't have to share a platform with VW, however as similar as the Touareg and Cayenne may be in their origin, where it really and truly counts, there is no comparison between the two- the suspension, transmission and engine (except for the V6) and thus, driving experience are pure Porsche.

As far as making the rest of their sports cars more desireable, they aren't exactly resting on their laurels. The Boxster had new engines upgraded in 07 and the entire line up is getting major mid-model overhauls in HP, direct fuel injection, DSG gearbox, as well as touchscreen nav and bluetooth.

But all that's besides the point I'm trying to make. which is that which is diversity is the key to stability during economic down turns- kinda of like a stock portfolio, you don't want to have all your eggs in one basket. And if a slight brand dilution is a result,it's a necessary evil.

Also I might add, the very first Porsche vehicle, the 356 was a VW Beetle "rebadge" and its direct descendant (which is the only real Porsche according to purists), the 911- is same basic design as the beetle- rear engine, air cooled, and since Ferdinand Porsche designed the first VW, you could argue that all VW's are Porsches...

AUDI isn't even going to re-badge the Tiguan to make the Q5... but now Porsche is??? WTF is this world coming to?

Why is Porsche even bothering with such a thing. They need to stick with their sports cars rather than making SUV's.

Real simple- sports cars don't sell when the economy is bad. No one "needs" an impractical 2 seater, but there's always a need for a family car that can be driven every day for shopping, hauling the kids, going on vacation, etc. And if you really want a 911, but the misses says no, what better than an SUV that drives like one? To illustrate, the Cayenne is currently the #1 selling model in Porsches lineup. If that keeps their sales stable and provides funding for their sports car development, I'm all for it.

If no one needs an "impractical" two seater then don't buy a Porsche. Porsche as a 'supercar' maker makes much more practical than it's rivals and you know that.

If they want a family vehicle then they should go buy a Q7 or something instead of a Porsche SUV.

Again, misinformation and bias. The new Q5 does not share any platform with VW. It is going to be based off the new A4 platform with the introduction of the 7-speed DSG which will be introduced as an option in the new A4 in September.

Agent63, You are trying to make a counterpoint, but what you are stating basically agrees with everything I outlined! For a 2 seater sports car, yes Porsches are much more practical (and reliable) than any of the competition. The point I'm trying to make(which you seem to have trouble grasping)is that the sports car business is a fairweather business- when the economy is booming, yes we sell a ton of them, but when times are bad, they are the last thing people think of purchasing-even if they are wealthy. However, there is always as NEED for something that comfortably seats more than 2 and you can go to home depot with, and if you are forced to buy a people hauler, why not get something different that drives like the 911 you really want?

As you said yourself all these cayenne customers would be going to buy a "Q7 or something" which is the whole problem that Porsche has. Back in last recession of 2001 (after 9-11)Porsche sales were next to non-existant. It's simply a practical solution to an otherwise serious problem....

I drive a Cayman S (it is like having an "E" ticket ride anytime I want it) and I frequently post on the "Cayman Club" website. Even there, folks seem to have so much trouble understanding that it is the Cayenne (and don't forget the Boxster) that saved Porsche's arse. Without those two vehicles, Porsche would not be what it is today (rolling in excess cash). More than likely they would now be under control of VW. Instead, the unbelievable has occurred, and VW is under control of Porsche. You can thank the Cayenne for that. Without that SUV, whether I love it or hate it, I would not have my cherished Cayman.
