Audi on top in first test at Mugello

Audi on top in first test at Mugello
Markus Winklehock's Audi set the fastest lap of the first DTM test of the season at Mugello this week.

The German set his best time on the final afternoon of the three-day test, beating Jamie Green's Mercedes by 0.166 seconds.

Paul Di Resta was third overall for Mercedes, but Audi was the stronger car over the three days, despite Tom Kristensen and Mike Rockenfeller leaving the test on the second morning to head to Sebring to contest the ALMS opener for Audi.

Alexandre Premat and Mattias Ekstrom also topped sessions on each day of the test and Premat is happy with the progress made by the team, and believes Audi will be in a strong position for the first race.

"These were some great days of testing for us," he said. "We were at the front of the field in all conditions and that's a tremendous feeling. It inspires even more enthusiasm in the team for the new season."

In addition to the 18 works drivers at the test, Christijan Albers made his series comeback, testing a 2006-spec Audi for Team Futurecom. The Dutchman previously finished runner-up in the DTM with Mercedes in 2003.

There was a huge difference between the quickest and slowest times across the three days at Mugello, but several drivers didn't complete a lap on the final day when conditions were much faster than earlier in the week.

Haha, the M3 GTR will be humiliated by the Audi's in ALMS.

And the years Audi and BMW both competed in DTM it was again Audi who took all the wins.

wake up buddy, the R10 TDI will be 15 seconds plus quicker per lap than the "kings" of BMW. Nice one.

So, why doesn't BMW participate in DTM? I guess they always run from Audi and Mercedes-Benz. As for ALMS, I suggest you ACTUALLY take some to learn the various classes. Audi races in LMP1 and GT class. You cannot compare the type of cars to each other. You reeeally are quite stupid, aren't you?

actually if you know your dtm history, bmw never got ran off the new dtm since they never participated in the new dtm in the first place.

speaking of dtm, wasn't it audi who quit their racing campaign like a sore loser in the old dtm after failing to recapture their title against mb?

in the last 4 years of the old dtm, all wheel drive was allowed and it would have been perfect for audi to showcase their quattro technology, but nooooo they decided to quit prematurely and then only to come back in the new dtm with a rear wheel drive car instead.

and don't bs yourselves thinking that it's unfair that audi wasn't allowed to use all wheel drive in the new dtm, since the cars in the new dtm shares nothing with their road-going resemblances anyways. they're basically specially-made spaceframe for racing purposes, and everyone in germany would agree that true race cars are rear wheel drive. which is unfortunately for audi because they can never ever make rear wheel drive production cars.

if they decide to make rear wheel drive a4s, it will destroy audi altogether seeing how the only good thing audi can promote is their quattro division.

it's unfortunately that deutsche tourenwagen masters still call itself a touring car racing series because it doesn't capture the same touring car spirit from the old dtm. nowadays you'd have to look for that lost spirit in other touring car championships around the world.

and if you actually care about touring car championships, then you'd know that bmw dominates in most touring car championships around the world - wtcc, stcc, itcc, atcc...

In the early DTM it was actually MB and BMW who where the sore losers.
After the domination of MB and BMW in the late 80's suddenly Audi joined the championship and also suddenly won the championship. It got even better when Audi won the dtm championship the next year, being the first manufacterer to win the DTM championship 2 times in a row.
MB and BMW didn't like and went lobbying against Audi for extra weight and the like for the Audi's, it was after that that Audi decided they had enough and aimed at al the other european touringcar championships.
After dominating those series in 1998 quattro was banned from all the series and Audi started their Le Mans project and also got interested in the new DTM.

there's still no hiding the fact that audi lost then ran from the big boys in the old dtm.

and the other european touring car championships you mentioned that audi "dominated" in, you must have meant audi's efforts in btcc in which it won one year then failed to win the couple of years after that.

that's hardly "dominating" imo.

I meant NOT GT class. This two classes couldn't farther from apart. Audi did challenge BMW at SPEED GT when they were racing in the early part of the decade and they were quite successful against BMW.

You amazingbimmer seem to fit the adage that I heard years ago:

What is the difference between a BMW and a Porcupine?

In the BMW the pricks are on the inside.

i was wondering when audi is finally making its comeback and then i realized that audi is still one of the least desired luxury brand around.

in every market segment audi fails to capture as many buyers as other luxury brands despite offering similarly competitive pricing. sounds like the audi brand still has a desireability factor to resolve.

and audi's success in non-production car based circuit racing only masks the fact that other luxury car brands, namely bmw, are more desired in privateer racing all over the world.

is audi the underdog in the motorsports arena? hardly. just look at audi's quattro and its long history of success in motorsports for crying out loud!

blame the stupid privateer team managers.

Your comment validus00 regarding Audi's leadership in various markets is off base. Audi leads in many markets including not only China, but all of Eastern Europe, is head to head in all of Europe and many of its models lead their segments globally. So, that assumption is more bias than fact. In the US, Audi has not done its homework-simple, not because in anyway do MB or BMW make better cars than Audi. That has long been laid to rest. But it is not my goal to go tit for tat arguments, but you are not an authority desirability. Audi's growth is proof enough of its desirability all over the growth.

validus00validus00 - 3/16/2008 3:11:33 AM

but when both carmakers offer comparable pricing for their cars, desireability BECOMES an issue.

it's not a production issue as opposed to a demand issue, because if demand outgrows production, then we should expect pricing to exceed those of its competitors. since such is not the case, it's not a production issue and merely a demand issue.

econ 101, factors that directly affects demand are: brand perception, which is related to product desirability, and perceived product value. it must either mean that audi should sell their cars cheaper or attempt to raise consumer's perception of its products. if it's the first, then it means audi should fire their analysts or if the latter, admit that there's a brand perception problem, aka desireability problem, and market their products harder.

since we've seen a recent rise in new audi commercials, it's apparent that even audi now realize they've got a desireability issue. so don't fool yourself.

i may not be "an authority desirability", but global sales speak for themselves on just how desirable the audi brand is compared to its fellow german luxury brands.

the numbers at first glance of 2007 global sales:
audi sold 981,000 units with a reported 5.9% growth
mb sold 1,200,000 units with 3% growth
bmw sold 1,277,000 units with 7.7% growth over 2006

if yearly growth continues at similar rates, it would in fact take more than 1000 years for audi to even match mb in sale volume, let alone bmw's sale volume. but don't worry, that's audi's desirability issue, not yours.

actually i feel bad for exaggerating the 1000 years for audi to catch up to mb, because the math works out to be only 7.3 years.

in regards to the chinese market where audi sold 100,000 units at 25% growth over the previous year in 2007 versus bmw's 42% growth and 50,000 units sold in 2007, it would take bmw only 5 and a half years to reach audi in sale volume assuming similar growth rates.

Middle Management? Really? Where do you come up with this stuff? Do you have proof or data or statistics to prove this? I doubt it. It is one of your little fantasies you live in. I think that there are some actual kings and royality that drive Audis. I guess that is pretty good for middle management. Wow! Are you for real or just a made up character by Agent009? Your litte bimmers are pretty middle of the road uninspiring by the way. Considering the 7-Series is one of the worst in its class, that's not saying much.

FWD? There is no FWD Audi A8 available in the US. The only A8 that you can possibly get with FWD is the bare-bones 3.2, but that makes up about 1% of their European sales.

7 Series, worst in class? Depends on your perspective. It is certainly not as good as the A8, however.

What a comeback! LMP2 are a different class and are considerably lighter and smaller than LMP1s. Audi won the P1 class without issue and will likely repeat Le Mans. Congrats to Porsche for a great race though. No LMP1 beat LMP2. That is not extradorinary clown.

So according to you, lets follow some of your other logics amazinbimmer... An Audi is a tuned up VW right, because VW owns Audi. so that would mean that a VW is basically a porsche, because porsche owns VW, and that would mean that Audi is a Porsche, because Porsche owns VW, which owns Audi.

so in the ALMS, it doesnt matter that Porsche won, because an Audi, is a Porsche anyways...

Thats seems to be your logic...

And by the way, I am not ashame to say that Audi faced some reliability issues that is not very typical of their prototypes, but if Audi had to lose a race, I am proud to say they lost it to...oh just the winningest marque in all of motorsports...PORSCHE!!!
