0-100 the Z06 smokes it... interesting. Apparently the GT-R (Truly Awesome) has crazy boost at launch and tampers off. Will be no competition when the ZR1 comes out...BUT GT-Rs big brother is coming too!

The GT-R has had almost 40 years of racing experience(1969 was the first year). Many of the engineers who worked on the previous versions, worked on the new GT-R. Which means close to 40 years of engineering and racing expertise helped create this car. Car enthusiasts like Jeremy Clarkson and Tiff needle loved the previous versions of this car. Clarkson rated the R34GTR 8th on his 100 greatest car of all time.

as you can see, nissan and porsche have been battling it out for awhile. Whereas the current corvettes are successes on the world stage (recent thing C6,Z06) their predecessors were considered less then satisfactory. So really, its the corvette who has something to prove (which it has with the new versions, winning lemans etc)

The GT-R has never been banned from european circuits. It's never been there in the first place.

We will see. I am skeptical that this car is going to hold together, Nissans track record on simple cars is bad enough. I want to see tests with cars that are not massaged prototypes. In a year we will know if the GT-R is the real deal. We heard alot of hype about the 350Z and it has been a disappointment.

Lyonboy what are you talking about? Nissan reliability issue aren't that bad compared to other carmakers. Prototypes? Did you not read the article, the GT-R featured in the article was personally imported from Japan, in which the GT-R is already being sold. There are no prototypes. The 350z has been meant with praise from numerous automobile mags and media. Fifth gear liked it, Top gear liked it (except clarkson who hated its interior), hell even evo liked it, read there review

Evo awards the GT-R, R8,GT3 with 5/5 stars and the corvette 4.5/5, so really there all good cars that do the samething in there own way.

As for negative comments about the GT-R the only reasons evo could come up with was its thirsty, has small legroom in the back, the badge not being prestigious and not turning heads like a supercar. All of which is a good thing, since the badge will filter out all the car snobs, it'll leave the car to the real enthusiasts who recognize a good car when they see one.

Must say, the GT-R is really something. While I respect its performance, I would still take a R8 or GT3 over it, but there is no denying its capabilities...

There really no denying now what the GT-R is capable of, and to think it still had its speed limiter from Japan on. Both of these cars were barely broken in before the tests began against press prepped cars. To think, in the UK the GT-R starts at around the same price as the M3, unbelievable.

This GT-R is very impressive, at least based on these early reports. I'll reserve judgement until the car is available in the States. I hope I'm not too tall to fit in it!

I was never impressed by the looks of this car from the front or rear. However, the view from the sides is rather nice.

To be honest with you Audiphile, I've been hearing through the grape vine that the US spec GT-R might have less hp then the European and Japanese spec (not the first time a JDM model was tamed for the US)something to do with the different octane of gas available in the US, I could be wrong though just a rumor I've been hearing.

I bet this will force GM to put "Launch Control" on the next Z06.

Although the Z06 and GT-R were basically dead even.

Since the ZR-1 Corvette will be launching w/ over 620 hp I am sure GM engineers have something up their sleeve when it comes to traction control.

Interesting decision Z06 or GT R. As its been said already, both best values in the sportscar class. Z06 would probably win a rolling drag race, it also offers the true manual, and the ability to swing the tail out.
But, the GTR is IMO gorgeous easier to drive fast and would probably win on the track. Very tough decision.

The lexus LF A for its price will compete with the ZR-1, AND V SPEC version of the GT-R. Hopefully lexus gets it right there going into a fight with experienced rivals who know how to build a proper sport cars

Great work Nissan! A fantastic car at an excellent price. Another argument for "competition improves the breed". This should send Porshe, Audi and others back to the drawing boards and test tracks! Always hard to catch up though as we have seen in the sports sedan wars (M3 vs ISF vs RS4 etc...) since as the article states Nissan already is working on other variants.

As an european, hats off to nissan. For real. This is truly a fantastic car, with its own, distinctive design and recognition.
Sure, its a different league then m3, porsche, but its does what its suppose to do: its fast as hell.

We rarely see japanise car masterpiece, but this, for sure, is one.

...and then the GTR vSpec will bring everything back to perspective.

Its easy to write a biased writeup on these cars. First the GT_R has 60hp and 110 lbft od torque on the R8 so any comments regarding how "easy" it pulled away from the Audi are biased. They can be subjective all they want on the "Feel" of the car but the fact is these cars are not in the same power category.
I may take the GT-R over the Z06 just because of the AWD but its hardly a match in style and prestige as an Audi R8, Porsche 911 or Lambo. The new GT-R is a great car but the design has moved away from its original. Now, it simply looks like an Altima on Steroids.
My choices, from best to worse;

That was pretty decent but jeez, do the Brits have to take every opportunity to trash the Vette ("flimsy start button" "simple engine")? I know all about tactile feel and all that, but dang, the Vette weighs what, 3,200 pounds? Some parts are going to be flimsy, dude. And I'll bet none of the writers can fix, let alone diagnose, a problem with that "simple" engine.

It will be interesting to see what you'll really be able to buy a GTR for.

The only knock I have with the GT-R is how drivers are afraid to blow the drive shaft. Is that a real issue using Launch Control??? I wish someone would do several LC runs and see if the drive shaft will give...hmmm?

Z06 was the nearest competitor for #'s but I still prefer the Porsche for heritage and driving fun!

There actually a number of reasons. First off the cars in the video were barely broken in, second the test done by edmunds was during a cold day at a high altitude, which actually helps turbos if im not mistaken. Thirdly the type of octane put in the car matters, to get the full hp of the car I think the highest octane is required. There been some worries about the US launch, since some states don't actually carry the high octane required for the GT-R or is rare to come by.

Cold air will help a turbo, but the thinner air will hinder it.

An excellent barometer of the performance level of all of these great cars, however, everyone who knows racing, understands that different racetracks can enphasize differnet attributes of a car. The west circuit is a relatively small, tight track. For instance, Car and driver did a comparison that they call "the lightning lap". On this longer track, 4 plus miles, the Zo6 was much quicker than the R8.

The dyno tests measure horsepower at the wheels so if the GT-R is making 400 plus hp at the wheels, then the engine is most likely making 500 plus. The previous GTR skylines all were underated, so I wouldn't be surprised if the new one was too.

I think they are all fabulous cars with different characteristics.

I'm a Nissan fan. I love the performance becuase I'm a performance junky, but honestly as far as looks, it's the worst of the bunch. I wasn't too sure about the Audi either, but I saw one the other day...it's hot. Maybe, I'll change my mind when I see it in person. It looks like a Japanese attempt of redesigning an American muscle car.

Trust me I went to the auto show, and the car looks a whole lot better in person. I wasn't really convinced by the pictures on the internet, until I saw it in person. It has presence, its big, muscle, aggressive looking.

Really to sum up the impression of GTR by EVo magazine, i have taken several of their important quotes. And you can judge for yourself, why there is nothing on Earth like the GTR in the world today. Think about it, if a GTR can win the battle against all these magnificent cars like the 991 GT3, Audi R8, and Z06 and still cost about 65 grand(base price), I am willing to pay even one hundred thousand dollars to get this car, really the reputation of this car has exceeded the masters. So take a look at the following quotes and decide for yourself if GTR is worth your 80 grand value that Nissan has promised to keep in the US: to be frank I think it is a bargain at that price, i am sure in Europe people will be willing to pay around 100 grand for this "new performance Icon"

On a different note, I believe one of the reasons why the GT-R is such an all rounder and world beater is because they actually test and engineer there cars around the world. The engineers of the car tested it on Japan's race tracks, European race tracks (nurburgring) and American tracks (Laguna seca). I believe in order for the corvette to be a truly world beater, it should be tested on different tracks around the world.

Another thing I find interesting is people being doubting the GT-R from the get go. I assume most people here are americans, then you guys are late to the skyline party. The previous versions of this car have been track beasts, so much so that this car was being unofficially imported to Europe, the middle east, australia, and parts of asia. True car enthusiasts (not badge enthusiasts)have known about this car previous predecessors. If anything this new GT-R has had to live up to the hype of its ancestors, not beating the ZO6,R8,GT3,M3,TURBO, all of which is just icing on the cake.
