New York Auto Show: 2009 redesigned Infiniti FX gets more powerful engines

Along with the new redesign, Infiniti will be making some powertrain upgrades for the new 2009 Infiniti FX.

Currently the range-topping Infiniti FX tops out at 320-hp, with an entry level 275-hp. When the redesigned 2009 FX arrives in showrooms this June, to new choices will be introduced. The entry level model will come with a 3.5L V6 that produces 303-hp. The range-topper will now be powered by an outstanding 5.0L V8 producing 390-hp. Infiniti will continue to offer a rear-wheel-drive FX35 with a 3.5-liter V6.

Infiniti will offer four packages with the FX including Sport, Technology, Entertainment and Premium. Pricing will be announced closer to launch date.

Why in tarnation can't they have the 3.7L with 330 bhp as the entry level? It would give 'em real bragging rights having a base V6 engine that's better than almost all the competition's V8's.

I hope at least they offer the 3.7 as an option. Soon they will also offer the 3.0 Diesel so I don't know if Infiniti thinks that having too many options will affect them. I think not, I think that the more options the better; just look at BMW, who offers like 4 or 5 engines for some of their cars and it's one of the best selling automakers in the world.

Probably to differentiate the two models. Not only as far as power goes, but likely also cost. The 3.5 has been around longer and is probably cheaper/easier to produce at the moment, which allows Infiniti to keep the base model priced more competitively.

Also, while the FX is a performance-minded SUV, I still view it as being targeted as a more refined/luxurious vehicle than the G37 Coupe. The 3.7 might require a more aggressive tuning/exhaust etc. to reach 330hp that might be a little too unrefined for this car.

Oh my god, the front end is ugly. They were better off refining the front end of the current one like how they refined the G35 and making the G37. Maybe it'll take some time to grow on me but as of right now the front end's a DUD

I love everything about this vehicle. If you love something different with lots of power and technology, this is it. Only one that would even come close to challenging FX is the MDX.

I'm still not sure about the looks on this SUV. The front looks awkward but the back is ok. I guess ill just have to see it in person. But congrats to Infiniti for overtaking the ML550 w/382hp for a class leading 390hp. However I have to agree with Lyall that they should've put the 3.7L in the V6 instead.

Class leading, only if it comes out before the V8 X6, or before BMW drops that same 4.4L, 400 HP twin turbo engine into the X5.

I want to like the new FX but something just makes me take it less seriously than say an X5 or even the current FX.

I really love some things about it but I hate other things like the headlights, hood, & side vents.

Fail. Rear end has an attractive design, but the front including the monstrous grill is just plain ugly. The behind wheel vents look out of place too. Technologically, it's heaven for geeks, but I wouldn't own one.

Wow that's very inspired design. I think the inspiration was something like shark or crocodile. Looks extremely aggressive and unique.

And i am sure with that 390BHP V8 it will have performance to match it's stuunning looks.

This leads me to believe the new flagship (if it ever gets here) will be tuned for just over 400 HP.

Is the M getting the new V8? M50 anyone? with another 50+ horses on tap that car should rocket to 60 in the mid or lower 5 second range now.
