Honda Civic owners warned of flaw

Honda has written to all Civic drivers in Britain to notify them of problems with faulty handbrakes.
The Japanese firm said it was sending out letters to 63,000 drivers of the Swindon-produced car to alert them to the problem.

It comes after a number of customer complaints that the handbrake did not stick if applied when pushing the release button.

Honda has offered to give customers a new handbrake if they are unhappy.

A Honda spokesman said: "We do apologise for any inconvenience to customers.

"We will be sending out letters to our customers in March and April recommending that they visit their local Honda dealer to get an improved handbrake fitted."

The design flaw applies to Civics produced between 2006 and 2007.

Honda recommends that owners do not push the release button when using the handbrake, which may result in it not catching.

The flaw has been the subject of conversation on internet motoring discussion boards since 2007.

At least Honda owners don't have to keep putting out engine fires as in Mercs, BMWs and Audis as engines catch fire and explode when you drive over 85mph.

EL34, go fix your trabant with a hacksaw, plyboard and made in Germany stapler..and don't forget to pickup a fire extinguisher for your car also.

Every car I've owned has had a center-mounted handbrake. I own a 2007 Honda Civic Hybrid and I HATE the position of the handbrake. It is mounted on the left side of the center console. Convenient, sporty position when driving on hills the in San Francisco, bad for those who need leg width. I have plenty of leg length. I do not have enough width in the car for my knees, so my left knee rubs on the door and the handbrake drills into my right knee. Needless to say, I will replace the car much sooner than planned.

In all the cars I've owned, I have always pressed the release button when engaging handbrakes -- I've grown to dislike the high-speed ratchet noise. Never had a problem with handbrakes before, and I'm not having an engagement problem with the Civic. However, it has dropped out of the notch a few times. Maybe the notch gets damaged and the handbrake fails to properly engage. Guess I'll stop pressing the release button when engaging the brake.
