Will Your Next Car Have 4, 6, or 8 Cylinders?

Im very happy with a good 6 Cylinder. There really is no need for 8 with todays technology unless it calls for massive tourque, even then a diesel 6 should do fine.

It's really not a need for 6 in some cases like, the 4 is sometimes just as fast as the 6. The Acura TSX is already pushing over 200 horses on a 4.....

But like I stated some. Because some 4 cylinders are EXRTEMELY slow and some are fast...

And some are highly overrated...like the 2.4L in the TSX (which surprisingly makes only 190hp in the new accord).

Take honda's numbers with a grain of salt. They are great engines (and well capable of over 200hp with aftermarket modifications), but Honda's numbers never really match the Expected WHP numbers when they are placed on the dyno.

Most decent modern NA 4 cylindars produce between 130 and 160 WHP legitimatly.

And if your car is light...that's all it needs....look at the lotus.

The Current TSX has 205 horsepower and goes 0-60 in less than 7 seconds On a 4 cylinder.....Thats great...

The current TSX can barely move. Try 9 seconds 0 to 60, buddy.

If I can't get an I6 or H6 then i'd rather have a V8 or an I4. A 60-degree V6 is not too bad however. 90-degree V6 engines are inherently out of balance.

i like my twin turbo 6 and average 24mpg's in my 335i sedan. a V8 would be nice, but if I need that extra punch, i can upgrade the software to be a monster. i could never drive a 4 cylinder, unless i declared myself boring and old.

If I can get a 8 cyclinder for the mpg of a 6, I'll go for the 8. If I can get a 6 for the mpg of a 4, I'll go for the 6.

Like the Lexus 6 cylinder IS 250 gets 24/32....Thats the gas mpg of a 4 cylinder so I'll choose the 6...

Except for the fact that the IS250 is slower than the four-cylinder Audi A4 by a good margin, so there's really no advantage there.

Which A4? i'd say they're equal,especially manual IS 250. The 6 on the IS 250 is smoother feeling than the 2.0 in the Audi.

The A4 2.0T's quickest 0-60 time was recorded at 6.5 seconds, by Road & Track. It was equipped with quattro, S-Line and a manual transmission.

I haven't seen the IS250 attain a time under 7.5 seconds. It's a significant difference.

my 4-banger can beat 99% of ALL OTHER vehicles on the road! (it happens to be mounted in a honda bike. the 1% that ARE faster are BIGGER 4s in other bikes.)

the 4-banger in my car can get better mileage than 98% of all other non-hybrid, non-diesel vehicles out there. and STILL cruise all day at 85 - 90 mph if i wanted (with lesser mpg of course).

WHO CARES about 0-60 times when 95% of the time, i've already DONE accelerating and am just cruising?

i also have bet'n 60 - 85% better chances of AVOIDING accidents, due to superior handling and accelerative ability.

not to mention that bikers generally devote 150 - 300% MORE ATTENTION to what's going on than box jockeys.

Mine is a 135 coupe. then will install the Dinan Chip. Gas mileage is not as big of a concern for me. Performance is. My wife's car, we will be exchanging our 2008 535i for the 2010 X5 Diesel.

I prefer eight cylinders when they are available but I wont complain with a six...

i personally love the SOUND of a v8. however until i become financially independent and get to the point of not minding the upkeep costs, i'll stay with VVTi 4s.
the sound of a high revving 4 getting to the HOT cam is music too, of another sort.

Considering I am looking to get my next car 3-4 years down the road and so cars coming out now will be in my realm. I purchase CPO only. I have been heavily considering the Pontiac G8 GT fully loaded with the 19" alloys, 11 speaker blaupunkt, etc. New the car is listed at $32,745, which means a mid 20's price when I'm ready for it. I'll need a bigger car with a family coming up in those years following and why not have one that is fun.

As for the 4cyl. craze. It could be a mix. More manufacturers are using 4cyl. engines because with new technologies they are able to perform just fine and in some cases exceed V6 and 8 engines. Maybe not in torque, but other areas.

Also the need for a more efficient engine that can get you better mileage.

The only issue I see with this technology of 4cylinders is that adding turbo's and other types of VVT could bring up the debate of you needing to put more premium fuels into your car, thus paying more at the pump. Question is, at what point does the extra 40 cents for premium outweigh the fuel saving advantages.

I usually prefer a 6 over a 4. Additionally I want something with more torque than HP and something over 200 lb-ft of torque. This is good for most any acceleration, and more so when you have more than 1 person in the car you don't end up with nil-acceleration.

I know there are 4's with turbos that can meet this, but I have yet to drive a 4 that has power in the low end, most require you to rev it up to get there.

My next car will most likely be a 6-cyl diesel.

Well, when I graduate I'm getting a G35...so it looks like it'll be a 6...unless I decide to get a veyron instead.

The Miata is a 4-cylinder car, and it will knock your socks off.

since seeing the Fast & Furious movies and reading about import tuners, i know that 4s can be 'built' to match and beat v8s, to say nothing of 6s.

do you know of any Mazda Miata's built up to be 'Vetter Killers?

i've heard of v8s being shoehorned into Miatas, but i think the perfect balance would be destroyed by that.

not that even STOCK miatas are great cars as they are!

maybe a V8 or a 12 cylinder, god willing, but I don't know because I'm definitely not in the market for a car right now... who knows what the trend will be in 3 years, when I am ready for a new car...

I'll stick to my 6. I'll probably install a supercharger or turbo system(whenever one becomes available).

Not sure, but it could be an inline six (BMW) or V8 (Audi, BMW, Merc, Jag, etc).

My sensible side says go for a 335xi, because it will be my second car anyway. On top of that it's nothing to sneeze at, especially with a chip.

i just went from a 4 cly to a 6 cyl for my primary driver.
the family has grown up since i bought the 4 cyl four years ago. i wanted something with awd and i could could fit in the back seat.
originally, i though about a small suv, but ended up with a fusion.

I'll be buying the new Camaro with a nice V-8. However, it will have cylinder de-activation, so does that count as a 4 and an 8?

And the fuel is not a problem here in Bahrain, Small Country and cheap fuel .. not as other gulf countries but it is cheap enough for a V8 ..

What do people have against fours?

A good, strong turbo four, like the one in my A3 or a Saab, provides fantastic acceleration, little lag, a sweet exhaust note at high revs, easy tunability and high efficiency.

V8 for sure. Six doesn't do it for me. A V12 would also be nice. What do people have against V8s? The V6 applied to Acura's heavy RL sedan consumes as much fuel as the Lexus V8 in real life driving.

few have anything against MODERN v8s, like in the LS.

pushrod v8s have ONLY nice sounds and low end torque going for them. modern 6s and hi-output 4s shame them in hp/l and fuel efficiency.

my cousin just got a 2008 M5. hes a millionaire and complaining that hes getting 7.5 miles per gallon. i think more and more people will be satisfied with 8cl cars and 6's being that they have more than enough power for most of us.

Though my CX-7 does a good job for a 4 Cyl. Thank god it's a FWD, i'm able to get wheel spin on launch now w/ my wearing front tires!

Where's the 3-cylinder option? lol With gas prices so crazy, I want a small second car with a small engine.

imho, the ideal mix of speed potential AND economy, would be something like the Tesla, with a small ICE for recharging away from an outlet.

i understand it only requires 15 - 25 hp to maintain a 60 mph steady speed. (depending on weight and aero drag.) so a Tesla-like setup with a mere 30 hp gas or diesel could yeild INCREDIBLE range.

once the batteries are depleted, the ICE would have enuff ooomph to continue driving at 50 - 65 mph AND recharge the batteries too!

a 3-cyl would be the "BIG engine" in such a setup. which could be made with a small twin or even one-lunger!

I COULDNT GO BACK TO A 4 CYL ..I DONT THINK UNLESS IT WAS LIKE A HONDA S2000....I NEED THE SPEED.

the inline 6 of my sister's 330ci sounds and performs awesome...but is too fun to rev and thus doesnt get great mileage...my a4 2.0t's 4 cyl is quick and cruises effortlessly, but doesnt sound inspiring...i get about 370 miles on one tank of gas so i'll stick with 4 cyls
