2009 Audi A4 Avant- If All Wagons Were This Nice, Everyone Would Be Driving One!

Agent 001 spent another backbreaking day in Ibiza, Spain photographing and driving the 2009 Audi A4 Avant. ;)

http://shows.autospies.com/gallery/2008-Audi-A4-Avant-74/

My quick early impression is that the new A4 is lighter feeling and more nimble than previous Audi's.

It is also larger than the last model.

Best of all, the 'best of breed' interior quality remains intact and a killer B&O optional sound system makes your drive more pleasurable than ever.

I drove the 3.0TDI Diesel and the economy was phemonminal but unlike other diesels, there is NO shortage of power.

This new A4 Avant Diesel is one badass wagon.

Gorgeous styling, excellent performance and great economy makes this THE small luxury wagon all others will be judged against.

If all wagons looked and drove this nice, more people would be snapping them up!

Check out the amazing photos of the new car and beautiful Ibiza, Spain.

The 2009 Audi A4 Avant will feature the 2.0 TFSI, a new high-powered four-cylinder turbocharged engine that has 211
hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. The current A4 Avant offers 200 hp and 207 lb-ft of torque. The 2009 A4 Sedan will also offer drivers the 2.0 TFSI or the option of a 3.2 FSI V6, with 265 hp and the patented Audi Valvelift Technology (AVS).

Enhancements to the V6 include considerably lower inner friction and a valve actuation system called the Audi Valvelift System which varies the stroke of the intake valves. The engines will improve performance, while reducing fuel consumption versus previous generations.

A number of transmission options are also available, including a six-speed manual and tiptronic transmission, which is optional for the 3.2 FSI.

The Avant’s proportions have been reconfigured significantly from the previous generation model to emphasize both sport and practicality. The front overhang has been shortened, while the hood and wheelbase have increased in size.

The new A4 Avant measures 15.42 feet in length, making it 4.72 inches longer than its previous model. Its body is considerably more rigid and safer in build than its predecessor, while still being approximately 10 percent lighter. Those

proportions yield the largest luggage capacity in its class, with up to 50.5 cubic feet of cargo space.

Other points of emphasis in the interior and exterior design are the xenon plus headlights, which consist of 14 white light-emitting diodes, and a driver-oriented cockpit that borrows many features from the larger A8, including an

electro-mechanical parking brake that also comes standard on other Audi models.

Technology options for the new model include a complete range of high-tech systems. These include the Audi parking system (a parking aid and standard for the A4 Avant), Audi lane assist (the lane departure warning system) and Audi

side assist (which warns of hazards when changing lanes). The adaptive cruise control option maintains the distance to the vehicle in front.

When it comes to multimedia, the Audi A4 Avant will meet every user’s needs. The Audi Music Interface (AMI) allows for iPod connectivity and control. The navigation system with DVD including MMI is an additional upgrade option.

Bluetooth connectivity for cell phones is included, as well. The car audio system is by Bang & Olufsen. A 505 watt, tenchannel amplifier controls 14 speakers.

When will this be avaialable in the States and will the turbo diesel engine be an option in the US? My A4 lease is up in August and this new generation A4 may fit the bill.

The lease on my A8L expires in December. I hope the S4, with a 3-liter twinturbo V6 and DSG, is available by then.

tcatnat, the regular B8 A4 sedan is officially due to be introduced in September. However, demo models might be available as early as July, and you could place an order then.

If not introduced at the same time, the Avant will probably be introduced to the U.S. a few months after the sedan. If you definitely want the wagon, you might be able to get your leasing company to extend your lease by a few months to give you more time.

Good luck.

VERY early dealer demo models may be available in August, with the market intro retail units arriving in September. Sedan and Avant should go on sale at the same time.

That's a very nice A4. Will they bring it to the states?

Is that a hotel in Spain? Nice landscape.

That has to be one of if not the best looking wagon ever. I really hope that the A6 version looks as nice.

Has anyone noticed how agressive-looking recent autos have become? Just look at the front of the A4. If cars could talk, this one would probably say "Go ahead. Make my day!"

My Dad used to own a huge 1959 Buick LeSabre hardtop coupe. For those of you not familiar with the car, it had enormous tailfins, portholes, and an enormous "grinning shark" eggcrate grille integrated with quadruple headlights. When I got my first look at the new A4, that grille reminded me of that old Buick.

Audi has one of the best interiors on the market.

Who do you think has better?

last time I checked, chryslers have "pathetically cheap" interiors. what have you been sniffing on?

Wow that's sexy. I thought that was an RS4 for a second. If they made this that nice, imagine how the RS4 will look.

The new A4 saloon and the A4 Avant will arrive in the US at the same time around September/October 2008. The diesel probably not till 2009. The Q7 TDI arrives first. Demo and launch events will start in summer of 2008. Dealers have more info on that.

Thanks for the great photos and write up 001! Is there a video review soon to be posted?

My fam's BMW 325xi wagon lease is ending in October and needs to be replaced- this will definitely be a contender! Does anyone have any pricing information yet? My family only leases and I've heard Audi's leasing deals are not exactly stellar. Either way, the wagon competition is a lot tougher now and you really can't go wrong between the 3 series, c class (I'm guessing wagon is on its way?), or the a4 I suspect! Unless we go the way of the ho-hum Volvos again, gah!

Oh no, gramzee, don't take the Volvo route. Think of your family - do you want your wife and children to die of boredom?

Absolutely stunning! I am blown away! This is easily the best-looking wagon they have ever produced, making it quite possibly the best-looking wagon EVER!

Also, I don't know if anyone else caught this...

"The 2009 Audi A4 Avant will feature the 2.0 TFSI, a new high-powered four-cylinder turbocharged engine that has 211 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque."

211hp, yeah, only 11 horses more, but... 260lb ft of torque?! That's crazy! Especially for a turbo four! Except this car to be super-quick and make the V6 even more obsolete! And with the 3.0TDI and 3.0TT S4 coming... they may as well dump the 3.2 right now.

ChipChip - 4/5/2008 10:25:07 PM

Noticed that too S4, but I think this proves your point. There will no longer be a V6 A4. Almost everyone gets the 2.0T anyway, and those with a need for more power can step up to the twin turbo S4 (Which I assume will be the 335i competitor)

To compare to main rival BMW

328i/A4 2.0TFSI = 200hp+
335d/A4 3.0TD = diesels
335i/S4 = 300hp+
M3/RS4 = 400hp+

That sounds about right?

What's your grutch with the V6, you haven't even driven the new one which revs to 7500rpm.

Unfortunately, Chip, there will still be a six-cylinder A4. It just doesn't make sense. I still think there should just be A4 (2.0T, $35K), S4 (3.0TT, $45K) and RS4 (4.2, $55K-60K).

Heyhuub, what's my "grutch?" It's just unnecessary. It adds clutter to the A4 lineup and the 2.0T is quite possibly a better performer. And it's not fun. It sounds nice, but it's not nearly as fast as the competition.

AnthonyAnthony - 4/5/2008 6:00:07 PM

This is extremely nice. I still need the extra size of an A6 Avant, but it would be nice to have this instead. I love the way it looks.

You do know it's five inches longer than the current A4, right? It also has a wheelbase that's six inches longer, putting it only 1.3in behind the A6's wheelbase. It would probably be a good fit.

Audi has always built nice looking station wagons and this one is no different but they should forget about the Led's in the headlight, it looks tacky and childish, almost like Toyota would do.....

Are you kidding? I mean, really, is that a joke? EVERY magazine--EVERY SINGLE ONE--that you could possibly read comments on how a new model has the "usual Audi top-notch quality" or it is "once again at the head of its class for interior design." Get a clue.
