Livingstone wants 20mph speed limit for London

20mph? Why when I visited I was amazed if I saw a car moving more than 3mph in London.

This man is a twit. And has screwed the people of New York City by polluting our officials with nonsensical rantings of tarrifs.

Fully agree that the guy is a twit -- most politicians are -- they just want to be seen to be doing something. If he is worried about pedestrian deaths and injuries, he should build pedestrian overpasses and underpasses even if his buddies are awarded the contracts to build same. If London is that screwed up, then raze the city to the ground and start from scratch with business towers in the middle and residential towers on the outer perimeter. A spoked array of moving sidewalks could connect the business core to the residential perimeter. Challenge to Donald Trump: put together an investment alliance to build such a city from scratch in the north-eastern part of the U.S.

How would it work in NYC though? In London, cameras photo every car entering and leaving but NYC doesn't have the cameras.

Yes, I know what liberalism means, as well as what a liberal is. Your opinion on what he is doesn't change the fact of what he is. I understand you being there and maybe having a different perspective, but sorry, this is what it is.
A congestion charge is ridiculous.

Livingstone is left wing - not a liberal (otherwise he's be in the Liberal Democrat Party). He is a Labour candidate, not a proper socialist but a big government, lots of intervention type of person.
In contrast, a liberal would let you drive where you want for free, and petrol would be as cheap as possible. A car is the ultimate extension of liberal transport - freedom to go anywhere, whenever, wherever.
A lot of people don't understand what liberal means - you do know that most Republicans are economic liberals? I don't mean to patronise but one hears so many people saying "Damn liberals stopping me...etc", when a real liberal would just let you do it! Left wing people hate liberals, a reasonably famous quote is "Liberalism is a just a handy disguise for the evils of capitalism".
However, nowadays the term liberal usually refers to social liberals, who wish to let people live their lives free from discrimination or whatever, and with as many choices as possible.

The congestion charge was a smart decision and many more cities should look into that.
But lowering the speed limit to 20 mph is ridiculous. It will have no effect to the environment.
He should be concentrating on getting people to drive less. Going form driving slow to driving extremely slow is ridiculous.

I live in London, and I now think the Congestion charge was a good idea. Lonodn has fantastic public transport, and no-one needs to drive into Central London. It was only the centre that was charged for, a relatively small area, not the suburbs or anything. It made driving in London easier, as there are fewer cars! It stopped a lot of people driving, and encouraged use of bicycles and scooters and mopeds (which don't pay), and buses and the Tube. I can't think of a place in London which you 'need' to drive to. The Tube goes everywhere, and if it doesn't, catch a bus or (dare I say it) walk!

I thought having the regulations for cars to change their front ends were enough. and next, here in the suburbs of DC, we'll have tolls on some of the biggest and crowded hwys in the county. this is some bs right here.

Wait heres a thought. How about training the people in england how to freaking drive? I went out there for a summer and oh my god i cant even cross the street cause they will NOT slow down for anything. I Swear they almost were trying to hit me while i cross. People would speed up. I really think he should make everyone take their driver education again. Also, actually teach people how to drive.. People have road rage there admit it.. And its BAD. They just want to take a pic of every person in london. You know that the govt is corrupt right? I mean doesnt london have over 2 million cameras? Come on now.. Bush wants to do that here too, but it wont be so easy. Bush told whats his name to doa subway bombing, so that the people of england would get scared into war. And the Tube bombings were in 2005 - I don't know what war we got 'scared' into...we were already in Iraq.

They put the cameras really really high so people will just go about there lives not really knowing that they are under watch. I guess if they dont care why should I ? At least people with lamborghinis and ferraris can look cool going 30 mph. Its going to be a slow head turner for sure
