One Drive In The 2009 BMW X6 And You Know It Will School The RR Sport, ML, FX and Cayenne

One Drive In The 2009 BMW X6 And You Know It Will School The RR Sport, ML, FX and Cayenne
After spending just a day in the 2009 BMW X6, I realized that the RR Sport, Mercedes ML, Infiniti FX and Cayenne are now oldies but goodies.

I drove the X-Drive 35 the first half of the day and the X-Drive 50 the second half.

MORE UPDATED PHOTOS HERE http://shows.autospies.com/gallery/2009-BMW-X6-75/page18/

And to be honest with you, I was more excited to drive the 35 BEFORE I got to South Carolina.

It's so awesome in the 335, it should be just as amazing of an engine in the X6, X5 and whatever else they decide to put it in.

But the star of the show today was the new twin-turbo 8.

OMG, WHAT an engine!!!

It's the best 8 I've ever driven. IMAGINE what it will be like in the next 7 and 5!

And that sound!!!

Forget gas mileage...THAT's the X6 I want!!!

And speaking of gas mileage, the 50 wasn't as bad as the long term X5 4.8i that I'm currently driving.

My X5 is getting about 14.9 city and 16.5 highway where the new 50 was tracking about 16 city and 20-21 highway.

Amazing for its power and thrust.

And if you're wondering, the 35 got around 19 city and 22-23 hwy in our tests.

The X6 has wonderful presence and a wicked stance.

It almost looks like it would look better dirty nd dented than clean and waxed cause it's one nasty boy!

The new X6 also handles very well but so does my X5.

Where you really notice the X6's prowess is through the cones on a track.

It's a little easier to manage than its big brother.

Suspension is the best of any SUV on earth and it should be...it's a BMW after all.

A couple neat features...padded console for the area your knees hit for comfort is something everyone should have...They're great for a long drive.

The negatives?

Not much.

No panorama roof, no active cruise option and it is a little pricey.

But the one thing that bothered me most was NO grab handles above your head in the FRONT or BACK seats. :(

I know you were thinking I would say the blind spots because of the roof but honestly the weren't that bad. Not ideal, but not that bad.

And for the guy who blogged he was 6'2" and his head was hitting the roof, well, he needs to seek help learning how to adjust a power seat.

I'm 6'5" and I had a good 2-3" to spare.

Finally, it's easy to see why there is a lot of buzz around this vehicle.

It has it all...looks, power, presence, handling, cachet, etc., etc. etc.

The 2009 BMW X6...Drive it ONCE, it you WILL need it.

And the color combo to get in my opinion is the white with the alcantara/bamboo interior with the heads up display and running board options...UNREAL looking in person!

X6 or RX330...hmmm, let me see...X6! Duh!!!

The two have totally different driving dynamics/characteristics. The RX is more family oriented (less sport), which is OK. It's a luxuriously confortable city tourer. The X6 is all sport and with a lot more road-going handling and stability. It's meant for the sports-car driver that also wants additional space for her "stuff" without having to sacrifice much of the sports-car feel. Definitely how the FX feels, but now with BMW dynamics.

GoObama08, yes it has keyless start and for the record it can be ordered with active cruise control, which is much better than Lexus' laser based system. It uses radar which can penetrate fog, smoke and detect other vehicles better in bright light than the cheaper lexus laser cruise control. More expensive to make them though so cheapo Lexus will wait until the Germans have perfected it so they can copy it like they do everything else That BMW and Mercedes develops.

Agent 001,

You said that you are 6'5" tall, and your head cleared the X6's ceiling by 2-3 inches. I have two questions:

1) Were you sitting in the front or rear seat?
2) Were you able to stretch out your legs fully at the same time your head was clearing the ceiling by 2-3"?

The reason I ask is that I am 6'4" and long-waisted. I am curious as to how somebody my size would fit in a car with such a steeply sloping roof.

Really i have never seen a bigger BMW puppy than Agent 001, poor fellow, he breathes BMW in every second of his life, no wonder, he always has something to say about BMW when he exhales. Really his behavious is almost freakish(obsessive). How can he even possibly emagine that the X6 will tame over cars like the Cayenne and RR sport. First of all the RR sport looks a million times more macho and quality car than the hump back fashion accessory X5 that BMW is selling as X6, and the Cayenne is the best driving SUV on the planet, and the turbo version Cayenne produces so much power can smoke the weak BMW in it's pants.

I absolutely hate the design of the X6, the design just does not make sense, almost looks like an X5 whose rear has been chopped off. There is no evenness in the design. And for all those buyers who are pre ordering(Agent 001 reported that interest for X6 is very high in another article) really i would suppose they have a pathetic perception of style and beauty. To be stylish you don't need to have your back chopped off, you can be beautiful and stylish, like for example LRX Land Rover.

yes, you're right, the only opinion that matters is yours, and all other opinions are wrong.

Of course, some people have actually seen the X6 in person at auto shows. Some have even driven it and know how it compares to the RR and Cayenne. Damn those people though, the only opinion that means anything is that of one person who has neither seen nor driven the X6, and that person is you my friend.

All hail Farabira, leader of Autospies!

Wait, nevermind, I actually have seen the X6 in person too, and I think it looks awesome. If it drives like every single magazine who tested it this month says it does, I might be replacing the X5 with one at the end of the year. Look i am here to voice my opinion, just as everyone else is. And to me the X6 looks like a design that jusn't is all out of sorts. Now you can disagree or agree with me, that's up to you. But i doubt that the X6 will drive better than the Cayenne, especially, because the Porsche has been hailed as the best driving SAV on the market for several years, and the X6s driving dynamics is just like that of an X5, and the X5 never drove better than the Cayenne. And about looks, really, except for hardcore BMW fanboys, no publication has appreciated the design of the X6, and compare that to the RR sport, which is really a magnificent looking SAV.

If you want something to scale mountains with on the weekends, fine, look elsewhere. I don't think that tiny, tiny, TINY demographic is the one BMW is going after. 001, I am the "blogger" who could not fit in the X6. I was reffering to the back seat, the headliner simply does not allow for a tall person to sit back there. The X6 is not a big vehicle on the inside, and is no way pratical, the shape of the vehicle has no use, not even astectic use. Im sure it drives amazingly, but that does not warrant the price their asking for it, especially next to the already excellent X5. Time will prove this.

“…the X6 is shockingly agile. The quick steering makes it easy to arc into bends, and there's so little body roll that you feel like you're barely pushing the vehicle's limits.”

I understand that a few Bimmers & Benz's of the past may of left some with a bad taste in their mouth, but both companies are really on top of their game lately & still some refuse to recognize.

IMO they have the most complete & desirable product lines in the auto industry, they stay ahead of the pack with innovative models, technology, designs, & class leading engines. Lets get it right. The X6 is not an ML, RR Sport, or Cayenne competitor. It competes against the cross-overs on the market. Primarily the the FX. There is no doubt BMW can make better cars than Infiniti so I guess there's not much competition there.

As for the comment on the RX... The RX doesn't even have a place with the RR Sport, ML, X5, and Cayenne lets be realistic. It is a good car to drive though. I was in my friends RX350 it was comfortable but at the end of the day it still shares parts with Toyota(FACT not opinion) so i can't find a way to justify the premium over a Highlander well equipped.

Now the GS/LS is different. GS is my favorite, but LS I an awesome deal on, and my S550 is my marque car.

huu76, I promise you this, if BMW does make a turbo 4 it will kick any Asian Branded Cars 4 cylinder Ass.. You can write that in stone my dear friend.. And yes it will be very prestigious for them to do so considering the price of fuel these days.

the "fits four golf bags" comes straight off BMWUSA.com. While you were busy looking up dimensions, calculating area, and coming up with conspiracy theories you could have just looked up the source.

As for the "does 99.9% of the population need [an X6]", no, of course not. And 99.9% of SUV drivers don't need an SUV, yet they buy them anyway. Plus the X6 is not a volume car, it's not supposed to sell to those 99.9% people. You can get a RAV4 or RX for those folks. The X6 is for the other 0.1%, and that's more than enough people to sell out of a vehicle that's being built in such small quantities.

"huu76" you know you're a biased troll right? You do know that don't you? Keep it up though I get a kick out of your "in through one ear & out the other arguments."

One major sign of envy or jealousy is how you try so blatantly hard to denounce BMW at what they do, & then hold Lexus in such high praise for products they essentially created from another companies ideas.

Name one Lexus that wasn't placed in the market to compete with an already existing German model line? Name just 1!

Here I'll make it easy for you right now, you can't! That's because there hasn't been any truly original & unique Lexus models since they formed. Which is why you can also bet that since day one they've been testing their cars with the German competition in the vicinity of their own labs.

I would never say a Lexus is a bad car by any means because they're in most cases 1-step off the mark of the benchmark. However they are indeed the robots of the 1st tier luxury car world as they have no soul...

Thumbs up MunichRob!!!! He is just another Lexus Troll, trolling the BMW threads defending a product that really has no defense, hence his mental anguish... SO SAD!

I'm just curious. The Cayenne GTS just spanked the BMW X5 4.4 in a direct head to head. How did the X6 leapfrog all of that?

The X6 is 400 hp & 450 lbs of torque ... uses dynamic performance control which adjusts torque between the rear wheel + X drive. No comparison. Just drove a Cayenne vs X6 3.5 and the Cayenne felt cumbersome and off balance. Tested on 200 ft skidpad in wet conditions ... then on the same slalom track back to back.

1. It was the X5 4.8i.

2. I don't know why they compared the 350hp BMW to the 400hp, purpose-built, harsh-riding Porsche. It isn't really a comparison--you want performance, you buy the GTS, but if you want a balance, you buy the X5.

3. The X6 has 400hp, as BMW4me said. It's a better comparison. It also supposedly weighs less than the X5. Unlike the Porsche, it doesn't sacrifice luxury for performance.

This is a girl's car. The ML and the FX are useless in their own right. At least you can haul stuff in the back of the Range Rover. And it offers no serious competition for the Cayenne. It's not schooling anything.

Agent 001 is the biggest BMW puppy in Autospies because almost all of his posts are about BMW, please check out his history of posting. I just can't help myself judging that he is a bit biased, because this year there have been introductions of many great cars, like the GTR, the Jaguar XF, the Porsche GT2, Mercedes C Class, and Audi A4. And his number of postings on BMW 1 series and the X6 far exceeds the postings on all the cars combined that i have just mentioned.
