I dont know, carbon fiber and Fiberglass are one thing, and plastic is another. I dont know if Im ready for a plastic car yet. Other than that with the X6 I dont love it nor Hate it. It doesnt stir anything within me. Basically an X5 with a sloping back, creative.

Plastic Fenders are for safety! I thought Renault had the patent on these in plastic. In the event of a head on collision with another motor vehicle a metal fender can distort the "A" pillar causing the windshield to become loose thereby rendering the front airbags less or even ineffective. “Plastic” is the future wrt cars, get used to it!

Every car company with cars in America can show you a picture of a deer hit that didn't hurt the occupants. What does this prove? In most cars it wouldn't have ripped the front quarter apart.....BMW there is a $3000 repair bill.

001 is trying to say that this was from a deer at 75mph?? I agree wiyh Vendetta that the deer was just grazed at that speed and of course was it full grown or like was it "Bambi" size?? If he had hit it head on it would have rolled it over the hood and landed on his front lap sitting next to EL34..... :=))

This is actualy quite weired of bmw to put plastic fenders, although if u think about it, its actualy pretty practical, no rust, easy buff-out with a blowdryer and worstcase, parts dont cost as much as new metal parts.

Well let me put it this way, if hit a deer at same angle same speed same everything in a lexus, it would of caused same broken lamp, broken bumper and twisted medal quarter panel. Now with this, all you have to buy is another quarter paner which is going to be fraction of the cost for the lexus part which is going to be medal or the whole quarter panel will need to be rebufed, bondoed etc. I think its a smart move from bmw. Although im not sure how durable it is for example if u hit it with a fist etc, would be problematic if it breaks, if not kudos to bmw.

and really think about this point, Rust, small scabs/stone chips that are not taken care of will imidiatly rust, on plastic.. well it splastic no rust needed :)

The plastic fenders are to save weight. I thought people would know this kind of stuff, the e92 uses similar wings i believe. It won't be long before other manufacturers are using similar techniques to lower weight, thus improving performance and fuel-efficiency.

Many cars have plastic fenders - they save weight, are easy to repair and easy to make into more complex shapes. Plus they're safer for peestrians.

Even Rolls Royce has synthetic fenders (for the above mentioned reasons). So, think, think again, and than write.

Yea and have fun being ripped off by BMW for parts and labor to fix that thing. Too bad that deer wasn't EL34

A major radiator leak for a car that is supposed to go off-road. I wondered how the X6 would look with a "bullbar" or "Deerbar." Sadly BMWUSA does not offer that accessory, yet.

Leave it to nature to make a design improvement to the AzteX6.

a few years back, I DID hit a MOOSE. altho' my windshield got seriously cracked, there was MUCH LESS body damage. so little, i just lived with it and pocketed the insurance money. (did get a new windshield.)

total body damage to my 2000 focus: 1) one very small almost unnoticeable bump on the L front fender, where the moose's knee made contact. 2) one small nick at base of R rear window frame. i figure that the moose's RR hoof put that there, as he vaulted OVER the car. (with slight assist as my windshield pushed under his belly.)

Ahh Thats gross... I would have been traumatized if I was that driver getting out of the car after something like that covered in blood and guts. The deer looks like it was cut cleanly by the pics on the outside but the interior is another story! Truly incredible and almost fake looking. Thank god there arent any deer in Miami.

Its hard to believe the X6 was traveling at 70mph at the time of the collision with a deer. It so, there would be chunk of meat everywhere and blood splattered about the windshied.

My theory is: X6 test driver hit a flying canary.

That is what happens when driving a brick. In the X6 you would be able to avoid it for the most part. without fearing a rollover. Most likely the reason for the fender bender on the X6. Face it, BMW builds a car for real drivers.

Plastic fenders? It is dangerous for pedestrians. After the impact, I think it can occour serious danger. Is it safe? Is it conform with regulations?
Is it valuable for pedestrian protection?
In other hand the plastic change drastically their stifeness whenb the temerature change. I'm keen to know X6 fender solidity during winter.

BMW uses plastic fenders to reduce weight. At least one other car uses the same, the 3 series convertible. A la Volkswagen Touareg.

Car conmpanies have been using high-grade, deformable plastic wings for years. It means minor dings don't require panel work (the plastic is deformable -as mentioned), it's cheaper to replace if damaged, and saves weight!

Oh but did you hear they have over-head valves now, fancy that!

This is missleading. The weight safe on plastic wings are less than 0,3% on total vehicle weight. Basically the car manufacturers are using plastic wings in order to create complicated surfaces. The metal pressure technology is not proper for some design elements.
If you have technical engineering knowledge, using plastic is questionable in case of low temperature. At low temperature (e.g. winter) the plastic materials are more rigid and easy to break.
Major wight problem at the moment for car manufacturer the following items:
Engine - L6 engines are heavier than V6.
Comfort - Airco, electric motor movements for seats, door closing, trunk lid closing...
Headlights - Xenon headlights are heavy.
Chassis - Arms, springs, stabilizers, brake discs and callipers... all made from heavy metals.

I hope you can see, that plastic wings using simple delight of customers, but useless. Frankly speaking I would implement strict rules to check the solidity of body parts on low temperature, because the accidents are happening during winter.

Sorry BMW, plastic wings are poor product execution. Save weight on engine and transmission. Do you have enough money to replace L6 engines?

How does the deer look?

Some weeks ago my car(2008 Mitsubishi Pajero) hit a dog doing nearly 120KMH on the dark roads of Oman.

and it was even in better shape. Just a small dent in the front bumper. No breaking of lights or grilles like that.

EURO NCAP is investigating only hood, nothing to do with fenders. In other hand, BMWX6 did not tedt at the moment.

I'm a little off on this cause it seems to be a sidestrike. As in the deer was almost passed the car when it clipped him. Put that deer in the very dead center of the grille and watch it go through the windshield.

I've seen a 98 Ford Explorer clip a deer and the driver be perfectly fine.

An adult deer with full antlers hitting the X6 would be a different story. This accident represents a best-case scenario. Glad the driver was OK and the BMW did well, but this isn't a performance only an X6 could do.

And for those complaining about 001's support of BMW and its X6, don't worry. You'll see by the complete absence of his comments from future BMW ads how much 001's opinion (and autospies.com for that matter) is "respected" in the automotive world.

the moose was going in the same direction i was. i THOT i'd just pass him by on the right, but the dumb critter decided he'd cut me off on his way to the right shoulder.

i estimate i was going about 40 - 50 mph, which seemed fast enuff to ALMOST slip right UNDER him!

in another MOOSE kissing incident, i was behind a buddy in a chevy pickup, by approx. 200 yards. he sideswiped a moose, who took off his outside mirror.

by the time i came up and saw the moose (it was dark) i only saw a large mass down on the pavement. to minimize damage to my undercarriage (a toyota compact p/u), i aimed my inside wheels to run over her neck. (NO antlers, fortunately.)

that both provided a coup de grace for the poor critter, and allowed to pass over with NO DAMAGE to my tuff toy truck. (not even a wheel alignment was needed.)

Isn't going plastic the way Saturn went before? All their panels (except engine hood, top of car, and trunk lid) were made of some sort of plastic composite material to prevent dents and door dings. It just bounces back on minor bumps, and cracks on more severe hits.

The problem noted on Saturns was that in colder temperatures, it wasn't able to maintain as small of a panel gap, causing cold air and breeze to more easily penetrate into the cabin.

Plastic also tends to fade at a different rate than metal, so if you don't take care of your car, there is a possibility of the paint shades looking different on your car if it's a mix of metal and plastic.

Sorry, i meant the *paint* on plastic may tend to fade differently than on metal.

Who the heck cares what it was this vehicle hit, I would still take it looking like that...

buicks and pontiacs have had plastic front fenders since the early 90's.
it looks like a glancing blow to the deers rear hooves or it's head.
last year, around the corner from where i live, a minivan hit a deer. it went through the windshield and it and the driver ended up dead against the inside of the rear hatch.

I'm thinking that the majority of you guys have way too much time on your hands.

Some us may not love the looks of this car, but it will drive like a BMW; if you don't have one then you wish you could.
