Audi could be producing more A1 minicars than previously predicted as the carmaker bolsters output ahead of its 2015 sales deadline. You may recall Audi has set itself an ambitious target of building more than 1.5 million vehicles by the middle of the next decade, and to help reach that goal production volumes at most of the carmaker’s plants will be increased over the coming years.

A spokesperson from the company has revealed Audi’s Brussels plant is considering boosting production for the upcoming A1 minicar from current projected levels of 100,000 units to more than 120,000 units next year.

So why is the A1 undeserving of a premium badge? Will it not have Audi's amazing interior? Good roadholding? Premium materials? What will it be missing, apart from trinkets appease Americans for whom luxury means leather, fake wood and a slushbox?

1. It's got no room in the back.
Neither have the Merc SL or Lexus SC430. They're still luxury cars.

2. Funny looking proportions
This is a weird photoshop. I expect the real thing to look far better. And again, the Lexus SC430 has funny proportions.

3. This car may be priced for the lower middle class - but they won't drive it. A Mini is within reach of the lower-middle, but they don't generally drive them as they need more space.

And honestly I don't think this car would exist. Audi A2, sure, based on a VW Polo or whatever, but not something this small.

And don't forget, as people get richer, premium will become mainstream...at what point does mainstream end and premium begin?

And you do realize that, in general, cars are getting smaller. People are buying smaller.

It's the same concept as saying a Lexus GS or Audi A6 isn't a luxury sedan because it's the same size as a Honda Accord. There's no logic there. Just because this is the same size as a Golf or Mazda3 does not mean it won't be more luxurious and better to drive.

S4, you made my point but better. A small premium car has all the advantages a large premium car has over the non-premium version, but in a smaller package.

very well put. Achieving a target by selling such cars is not very creditable.

I still think Audi should not go down A3. This A1 would just clinch sales from Golf, Polo, Sciroco, Lupo...etc and will not do a great deal to boost Audi's image, but yes if Audi only cares about meeting the target, they'll need such cars.

There is a market for a premium small car. It's getting bigger every month. I think you know that some time soon Lexus will have to get in.
