I don't think the Germans have lost their competitive edge. According to Nissan engineers, the new Nissan GTR was benchmarked against the Porsche Turbo, so how uncompetitive could the Porsche be to have it used as a benchmark? And there are other German cars that others will never touch, like the Bugatti (VW owned and designed) and probably the new Audi R8 diesel with the 500 horsepower/735lb ft torque engine.

And the German companies aren't "barely hanging on" as you state. Where did you get that info? It's the opposite. Just read their financials, if you know how, and you'll see they are surpassing their revenues and operating profits from the previous record setting year. I'm not saying the Japanese aren't putting out great cars, I'm refutting your inaccurate statements which are really opinion, not facts.

That concept looks good, but I would hope a new Supra-esque sportscar from Toyota would be similar to the last Supra in terms of size.

I see only good things coming of this. Snide remarks about Toyota becoming GM aside, Toyota can only benefit from taking a larger stake in a brand that knows performance better than they do.

The possible return of the AWD Celica is a bit exciting. I would never have thought that I'd be happy about a new Toyota vehicle. And this might pave the way for a sub-IS coupe/sedan for the Lexus brand too. I would assume that Subaru would be tuning the engine and suspension close to WRX-levels.

Toyota and Subaru needs each other. Toyota wants Subarus's awesome 4 wheel drive system (Audi was the king of all-wheel system, but not sure anymore now) and due to the speed at which Toyota is expanding, Subaru's factories are churning out toyotas in Indiana..anyhow Toyota is continuing to expand.
