Is it wise to speculate on the new BMW M5 in order to make a profit?

You've all heard the story.

Your buddy tells you he got on a list somewhere for some exotic car like an M5 for MSRP and they turned around and made $20K by re-selling it.

So you're thinking...why don't I try that?

Well, when the last M5 came out, it was during the dotcom boom.

All sorts of stupid things were happening.

This time around it may not be as easy.

Yes, in certain areas of the country there will be opportunities to cash in on the new M5.

But before you plop your deposit down, remember there is an M6 coming AND an M6 convertible.

If it were our money, we would bypass the M5 and have a deposit down on an M6 convertible.

The waiting lists are virtually non-existent on the M6 convertible becuase we just announced it was coming in today's newsletter.

You've got a better chance of being first on the list and the M6 convertible will be the rarer car down the road.

And better looking in our opinion.

Food for thought.

What is your opinion?

yes, the M6 looks better than the M5, but, really, that's not saying much..... is it.....

it rides better than most cars on the road, but no one will ever know that except you, and bimmer crazy fans.....

i dress a certain way every day to create some sort of illusion, some sort of identity to the world and get treated wonderfully because of it.....

let's be honest with ourselves.... looks do matter.....

If you can find a dealer who will guarantee a specific position on the waiting list, and who will guarantee a full refund of the deposit if you decide not to take the M5, then its a small risk - and why not put down a deposit on the M6 convertible at the same time.

I have been able to do this with M-B products - I had one of the first couple of new SLs in Houston. However I tried it with Lexus and it failed, because the Lexus dealer in Houston did not honor the positions on the list and apparently sold dozens of SC430s to friends and allegedly also sold dozens into the resale market ahead of an actual customer waiting list.

So when placing a deposit check your specific dealer's policies on refunds and honoring positions on the wait list. I also recommend writing refundable on any deposit checks you give to dealers!
