Are These Truly The Most Innovative Automotive Companies In The World?

The results are in and Business Week Magazine has ranked the top 50 most innovative companies in the world. As far as the automotive giants go, there are a few surprises to our readers at large.  A lot of us like to think that the true innovators in the automotive industry may be the expensive luxury brands out of Europe.

However, according to Business Week that doesn’t appear the case, their annual rankings tell us an entirely different story.  If you take a look at the rankings and the quick summary for each company, it becomes evident Business Week seems to be placing gas saving technology and inexpensive product penetration in the market place,  at a premium, lets say, over driver safety and occupant protection innovations.

I’m not sure if I totally agree with that, and I leave it up to you judge these companies on the merits as you see them and tell us if they are correct of not.   Below is a listing of the rankings and a short insight into why they are placed where they are.

Ranked 3rd Overall- Toyota- Determined to retain its mantle as the hybrid leader among carmakers, the Japanese company plans to roll out a more fuel-efficient Prius in 2009. It’s also trying to match rival GM’s promise to deliver a plug-in gas-and-electric car using lithium ion batteries. Toyota is targeting 1 million hybrid sales annually by the early 2010s.

Ranked 6th Overall - Tata -  The Mumbai-based conglomerate jumps onto our list for the first time, fueled by its paradigm-busting $2,500 “Nano” car for the masses. The car, from its Tata Motors unit, is the world’s cheapest, thanks partly to a distribution model that sells the auto in kits to entrepreneurs who assemble them for buyers.

Ranked 14th Overall - BMW - While other carmakers talk about hybrids and electric motors, this German maker of sports sedans has concentrated on getting the most out of existing technology. As a result, the latest BMWs and Minis challenge the Toyota Prius for gas mileage and low emissions.

Ranked 16th Overall - Honda - At a time when most carmakers are worrying about high gas prices, sales of fuel-efficient Hondas are growing. Next up, the automaker will introduce gas-sipping clean diesels, small affordable hybrids and, in 2010, a private jet that’s 30% more fuel efficient than rival offerings

Ranked 18th Overall - General Motors - CEO Richard Wagoner Jr. is making design a top priority in his efforts to jump-start GM’s struggling business, giving stylists a first crack at new models before engineers. Add in new hybrid-electric SUVs, along with plans for the ultrahigh-mileage Volt in 2010, and it’s clear GM is trying to shake its stodgy image.

Ranked 29th Overall  - Audi - Company engineers look to biology for inspiration, studying the structure of insect wings to design car-body structures. To develop the top-of-the-line R8 sports car, Audi studied the streamlined shape of a swimming penguin.

Ranked 31st Overall - Daimler - The German premium carmaker cultivates the best up-and-coming engineers, whose recent innovations include a low-emissions, high-mileage motor. It uses the same self-igniting principle as diesel but runs on standard gasoline.

My thoughts exactly...

So you make the cheapest car in the world, build it in one of the most lax environmental countries in the world, then put it in service in one of the roughest environments in the world and let them fall apart.

Then you have one huge disposal issue.

So in the overall scheme, the idea is to flood the market with affordable low quality vehicles in a polluting factory that will end up in landfills causing an eco-nightmare.

But call that an innovation rich company? I say even Subaru is far more deserving than Tata.

hate to say it the big three are just as advanced as most anyone in eco-friendly plants..

Just about a year ago Toyota announced all U.S. plants met an ISO standard for eco-friendliness. GM and Ford met that goal 5 years prior with no fanfare, and no one noticed.

Tata introduces the world's cheapest car and they're suddenly one of the most innovative car companies in the world? The other companies on that list have been around alot longer and have constantly introduced new innovations throughout their existence. :/

BusinessWeek is good for business news, but I have found their automotive news to be terrible inaccurate and in some cases bias. I recall reading a review of theirs about some car and the reviewer sounded incredibly biased and clueless.

Toyota for example is not a very innovative company at all. But according to this list they're in 6th place because of hybrids - an invention that has been around literally for ages, since the beginning of the 20th century almost. If Toyota develops new batteries then that is commendable, but given the fact that this will add to their small list of innovations, I don't see how they placed in 6th place.

Daimler-Benz in 31st place? One of the most innovative car companies in the world is placed in 31st place? For what? There are so many innovative technologies and systems they've developed recently and there is no mention of this in this list.

Since when does BMW compete with Toyota? There are a bunch of diesel- and gasoline-powered BMW's in Europe that kill a Prius in gas mileage. Something the retards at Business Week obviously don't know.

I guess this shows us how overhyped hybrids are and how gullible people are in believing this hype.

if you take the time to read the article, it is a ranking of the most innovative companies NOT the most innovative products.

toyota, for example, is cited for their worldclass PROCESSES. they've known for having some of the most efficient and effective manufacturing in the world.

mercedes, on the other hand, is cited for their innovative PRODUCTS. hello?!? ABS, airbags, seatbelts, stability control, traction control, Pre-safe, crumple zones, diesel, etc, etc....all invented by mercedes.

Toyota is one of the most efficiently-run companies in the world, which is why they now sell more cars than GM all while consistently being extremely environmentally sound. And hybrid technology was at a two-decade-long standstill before Toyota reintroduced hybrids. No personal disdain against the Corolla and Prius for not being sporty will take away their accomplishments in manufacturing, technology and reliability from them.

...and I am not even the biggest Toyota fan, but all the whining needs to stop.

They didn't mention that Honda is the leader in the development of fuel cell vehicles, were the first to build hybrids, have conquered land (both on and off-road), sea, and air, and build some of the best and most reliable motors for almost anything you can think of. If that's not innovation then I don't know what is.

Honda is always tinkering with engineering possibilities - sometimes to their marketing/public perception detriment! But above all at Honda, it's all about the engineers in their white lab coats pushing for clever answers to sometimes crazy questions...

from all your points only DSG is innovation(even if it`s borg warner and was used earlier in motorsport)- they introduced it for series cars first . first quattro were using three open diffs - center and rear could be blocked manually , so it wasn`t innovative , 60`s jensen ff has more sophisticated AWD -viscous couplers , subaru leone had before audi AWD with center and rear blocked manually . audi only took this to rallying and introduce torsen LSD(invented 30 years earlier by american Vernon Gleasman) in 1987 and was upgrading torsen .

It's like, whenever I say I like a new BMW or Merc, I'm instantly boosted, but if I say the same thing about an Audi, I'm de-boosted! See here--not me, but them.

In fact, out of that list, the MOST innovative thing is most definitely Quattro AWD. It may not have been the first AWD system, but it revolutionized rallying and it really brought AWD to the street, especially in luxury cars. If the urQuattro hadn't happened, there would be no AWD luxury sedans.

Also, you can't forget the ASF (aluminum spaceframe). Introduced in the 1995 A8.

Hey Kinger and others-
TATA is the OLDEST company on this list.
it was founded 144 years ago in India. It manufactured the Steel that launched Britain's industrial revolution. Can people on this blog learn before they yap?

Continuing on the subject, India has smelted steel, iron and bronze for 7000 years. And Tata- has innovated low cost solutions for India's super-tough environment (120 degrees in summer) for a fraction of the R&D budget of European and our own US companies.

Lets not knock innovation just 'cause its not happening in America's rust-belt dying states, Michigan, Ohio and Pennsylvania where 80% of the jobs have shipped to conutries that design and innovate for a tenth of the cost.
